The younger eaglet at the Harrison Mills nest, died at 5:09 am on June 6 after being denied access to food for several days. At 6:45 pm on June 8, the female adult began feeding the remains of the younger eaglet to the surviving eaglet. There was discussion of what was happening, beginning here, but no pictures.

We are an educational organization, and what happened is an aspect of life and survival for eagles, so I am creating this thread for the s'caps that were taken during that time. In this way they will be available, but only for only those who wish to see them.

My post advising that this could happen:

I know some people here are new to watching eagle cams, so I do want everyone to be aware of something that sometimes happens when an eaglet dies. It is possible that at some point when the adults look at the body, they will see it as a source of protein, and they may feed it to Birdie.

As a human, I found that a bit upsetting the first time I saw it happen. But I also know that these are not humans - they are raptors who need protein to survive, and while they may prefer fresh fish, they are also scavengers who will eat what they can find. And in a way, I sort of like the idea that the strength Bogey has shown over the last week may be passed on to Birdie, and help Birdie become a powerful, feisty eagle, carrying a bit of both of them out into the world. love
