In mid-spring 2006, employees working at San Jose City Hall first alerted us to the presence of a pair of peregrine falcons that were regularly observed in the downtown area. The tiercel was clearly an adult in 2006, but the female was still in juvenile plumage. As such this pair did not appear to be nesting in the area at the time.

In early spring 2007, Jose Fernando and Clara were again regularly observed together in the area. Their loyal followers were excited at the prospect that Jose and Clara might actually nest this spring. In 2006 SCPBRG had placed a nest box on the building, lined with gravel, similar in style to the box that was placed at Oracle in 2000. The camera was positioned near the nest box. By mid-February the birds were observed engaging in typical courtship behavior, and by late March Jose and Clara had laid a total of three eggs in the nest box. In 2009 Clara meet her new mate “Esteban Colbert", raised 4 fledglings and for 2010 they even got a new nest box.

Esteban and Clara Colbert, two peregrine falcons, can been seen through the cameras, on top of San Jose City Hall.

San Jose Mayor Chuck Reid said $25,000 in donations from people and corporations enabled the purchase of a second camera.

“The timing is excellent, because it’s Valentine’s Day,” he said. “On Sunday, we’re going to have the falcon cams on to see what our two lovebirds are up to now, if they’re back in the nest. We hope to have some chicks in another month or so.”

Clara and Esteban Colbert have become worldwide sensations. “We have a fan base, a fan group. The Falcons have a Facebook page. We know that people around the world are watching them.”

March 17, 2010: The San Jose City Hall Falcons laid their 3rd egg on 6 March and began what we call, “hard incubation” because it continues with only brief lapses for 33 or 34 days. A fourth egg was laid approximately 2 days after the 3rd egg and will hatch about a day later than the other three. The female does most of the incubation but the male takes a turn while his mate eats, preens or enjoys some sunshine nearby.
