COLUMBUS, Ohio — Two peregrine falcon chicks living high above downtown were named and banded to help track Ohio conservation efforts.

The falcons, which hatched last month, were named Swoop and Spirit, 10TV News reported.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources showed the 3-week old falcons to school students.



The birds were named with the help of Marion City school students, who suggested names. An Internet poll let people vote on their favorite.

"So part of our monitoring program, we banned all the juveniles so we can ID where they go and how long they survive and that sort of thing," said ODNR research biologist Jennifer Norris. "City life has been good to them, in that they have a great prey abundance here, and the buildings provide the nesting structure."

The birds hatched in a nest on 41st floor of the Rhodes Tower, 10TV News reported. A live camera feed monitors the nest, one of 35 in the state.
