Part 2 - Eagles Arrive (continued)

  • March 23 - adult arrives with fish and eats on nest - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=487682#487682

  • March 23 - both adults work on nest, adding some moss, then mate; on nest for 48 minutes - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=487945#487945

  • March 24 - both there for over a half hour in the evening - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=488819#488819

  • March 25 - both arrive early, with breakfast for Mom - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=489001#489001; lots of activity including mating and adding some grass to the center of the nest, and Mom was on the nest as it got dark, then moved to a branch to spend the night; last observation at 11:11 pm; view of nest after grass was added, courtesy of IrishEyes:

  • March 26 - Mom was back on the nest when east coast observers checked at 3:30 am - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=489722#489722; she left around 6:20 am; one brief visit during the day, one visit at nightfall with eagle possibly flying up into the tree to spend the night

  • March 27 - both arrived around 7:08 pm - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=491084#491084; worked on nest for about 20 minutes, arranging straw and perhaps doing some digging

  • March 28 - brief visit by both around 3 pm - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=491521#491521; both seen perched together near the river at 6:45 pm; both on the nest at 7:45 pm for about 15 minutes

  • March 29 - Mom by the river in the morning - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=491930#491930 - and spent most of the day there; Dad visited twice and they mated both times; more moss seen on nest; both on the nest around 7:05 pm and rearranged the moss; one left quickly, the other stayed until dark then moved onto one of the nearby branches

  • March 30 - one (Mom?) on the nest by 6:45 am - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=492688#492688; stayed for about an hour, then moved to the river perch, then flew off; one back at 9:45 am for about 20 minutes (mostly on perch branches near nest); another brief visit at 2:45 pm; Mom in at 7:40 pm

  • March 30 - Mom did some digging, and snuggled in, testing nest bowl for size and perhaps actually creating it - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=493284#493284; first time we've observed that at this nest; second adult arrived; more work on nest; then mating; then one after the other, they left

  • March 31 - no eagles seen until Mom was seen on the nest at 3:43 pm, eating a snack - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=493809#493809; did a bit of work on the nest, then spent quite a bit of time sitting and lying on the nest (3:52-6:52pm), making us wonder if an egg was on the way; all the cams went down at 6:52 pm - leaving us wondering. The cams came back at 7:37 pm - and the nest was empty. Dad arrived shortly thereafter and did a bit of work on the nest.

  • March 31 - this was also the first day we noticed that Mom's tail looked off-center, and Terry had a s'cap showing some ruffled feathers on her back - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=494009#494009; we subsequently discovered that the outside white feather appeared broken, making it look as if she had more tail on one side than the other

  • March 31 - this was also the first time we noticed that Mom was banded - here's IrishEye's s'cap from 5:17 pm, posted the morning of April 1:

Part 2 - Eagles Arrive (continued)

  • April 1 - brief visit at 7:11 by Mom - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=494309#494309; an adult was subsequently seen perched by the river - shape of tail suggested it was Mom; she was still there at 11:47 and gone at 12:41, so spent at least 4-1/2 hours there; no one seen until 5:47 pm when one appeared, followed by the other and they did some work on the nest; mating observed at 6:08 and possibly again at 6:13 pm (or it might have been two views of the same event); not sure when Dad left, but Mom was laying down in the nest at 6:52. Dad returned with grass at 7:13 and they did some nestorations, then mated at 7:20 pm. Dad left at 7:44 pm; Mom perched on a branch for a little while, then spent the night sleeping on the nest.

  • April 1 - it had been mentioned before that Dad appeared to have a tinge of dark at the tip of the tail; mjb's comparison picture below shows that well, and also shows the thin dark stripe on the edge of one of Dad's tail feathers. There are some closeups later, but the angle is wrong to see the stripe.

  • April 2 - posts start here - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=494878#494878; Mom was up and preening at 6:14 am, and gone by 6:42 am; she returned at 7:48 and did some work on the nest, then left at 8:14 am; both were back and worked on the nest for a while in the morning, then Mom spent a little time down by the river, and then we didn't see them until Mom showed up at the nest around 7:30 pm. Dad showed up about 20 minutes later, they did some work on the nest and mated a couple of times. Dad left at 7:56 pm; Mom again spent the night sleeping on the nest.

  • April 3 - posts start here - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=495550#495550; Mom was on the nest at 6:03 am and was gone when we looked in at 7:30 am; Mom did more work on the nest in the morning, and brought some grass, then spent some time perched by the river, then again disappeared from cam view during the afternoon. Mom in briefly with a big stick around 4 pm; Mom arrived back on the nest between 8 and 8:30 pm to spend the night.

  • April 4 - terrytvgal noted that the adults were coming to the nest later in the evening each day, and wondered if that correlated to the fact it was staying light later each day - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=496674#496674

  • April 4 - posts start here - forum/viewtopic.php?topic=496242#496242; Mom left between 6 and 6:30 am; picture of the nest courtesy of cococat9, to compare with the previous view of the nest before they began work on it:

an adult was seen at a different perch by the river around noon; both adults arrived at the nest around 4 pm, did some more nestoration, and mated; Mom flew to the usual river perch around 4:24 pm while Dad stayed at the nest; not sure when Dad left the nest, but Mom left the river perch at 7:31 pm and flew directly to the nest. She moved around a bit, did a bit of digging in the nest, pulled some straw closer - and around 7:56 pm she began to fluff up and look pouffy, which often happens when an eagle is laying an egg. At 8:01 pm she began rocking back and forth a bit, and it looked as if she laid the egg at about 8:10 pm, though she didn't give us a peek at it for another 15 minutes.
