Welcome to the 2013 Season of the Spotted Eagle Owl- Johannesburg!
Also Known As - Pot Plant Owl

A spotted eagle owl (known as Pot Plant Owl) is a shining example of how animals and birds have had to adapt to man's urbanization and destruction of their natural habitat. With trees and other natural flora being cut down to accommodate the growth of the sprawling metropolis of Johannesburg, Pot Plant Owl was forced to leave its natural nesting habitat and find sanctuary in a pot plant on the balcony of a suburban home.
Africam feels this is an important story to tell, so we are putting these owls and their unorthodox nest LIVE on the internet for all to see, 24/7 with night vision and sound.

PPO Facts

I am a wild female Spotted Eagle Owl, living with my mate in densely populated Johannesburg, South Africa. Because of my chosen nesting site, a pot (potted) plant nest, I have been named 'Pot Plant Owl'. My mate has been named 'Pappa'.
Apart from Pappa and I, there are no adult Spotted Eagle Owls in the immediate territory, so there is no pressure on us to 'move on'. By calling through the night, we let all the other owls know that this territory is taken. We'll stay together now
My nesting season is August - December.
( Information from the Pot Plant Owl Blog)

2012 Season
Eggs Laid:
Egg #1- September 3, 2012
Egg #2- September 5, 2012

Eggs Hatched: The eggs did not hatch and were removed from the nest several weeks after the due date.

PPO Mom surprised everyone and laid two more eggs. Estimated dates laid were:
Egg#1- November 7, 2012
Egg#2- November 9, 2012

Eggs Hatched: Not available. Chicks were first seen on December 8th by Tracy.

Chick #2 died on Christmas Day (December 25, 2012). Tracy removed the chick the following day and said it had a wound most likely from an accident possibly during feeding. She buried the chick in her fenced in bird garden.

Naming: A contest through Africam named our chick Azizi the beginning of the New Year, Azizi meaning "Precious One"!

Fledged:
Azizi made her "Maiden Fledge" on January 20, 2013 in the wee hours of the morning.

We haven't had an update from Tracy since the last spotting of PPO, Pappa and Azizi over on a neighbors condo. Just saw a post and all is well with PPO and Pappa. Guess Azizi is on her own now!

Pot Plant Owl
Last night when we returned after our 3Cranes challenge, PPO and Pappa came to visit. We heard them hooting to each other before landing on the balcony. This morning we woke up to a mess on the balcony - you guessed it - soil all over the balcony floor. PPO is determined to keep laying claim to 'her' balcony nest.

Tracy posted once again and this time we had some news of a sighting of Azizi! Very Happy Since she left so abruptly I think we all worried about her. Such good news to hear all is well with her!

Pot Plant Owl
Got woken up this morning to Pappa's loud hooting. Best alarm clock ever! I also heard PPO returning the call - much quieter and more respectfully than Pappa who seemed to think it was a competition for the loudest 'voice' in the 'hood. We saw Azizi with PPO a couple of nights ago. We could tell it was Azizi when it took off from the roof - the flight was not quite as graceful as its mom, but Azizi still looked strong.

A new post from Tracy:

Pot Plant Owl
Yesterday.
Had a mess to clean up on the balcony this morning - lots of soil kicked around the floor. Visiting time again for PPO and Pappa!
Owl lovers - don't forget to keep watching Rusty, Iris and their new chicks live now.

Good Afternoon All! A new update on our PPO and Pappa from Tracy:

Pot Plant Owl
Allan stepped out onto the balcony to be greeted with a "WHoo!" hoot from PPO who was on the neighbour's roof. He ignored her and sat down on our new balcony chairs. Next minute, PPO flew to our roof right above Allan's head, and Pappa flew in and landed on the balcony pillar right in front of Allan. A few long seconds passed before Pappa begrudgingly left 'his' balcony.
