Victoria - Wild ARC Plant Pot Hooters owl cam - 2012/2013 Cam Discussions/Obs, Pics, Videos

This new cam will let us observe a pair of great horned owls (GHO) nesting in a plant pot in the city of Victoria, British Columbia.

This thread is for Discussion, Observations, Screenshots & Videos solely related to actions / events / occurrences at the Victoria Wild ARC owl camera

Screenshots and photos and/or links to videos are welcome in this thread as part of the discussion. We welcome all screenshots and videos of the nest captured via the webcams.

As a courtesy to viewers with slower internet connections, please limit the pictures in each post to no more than a total of 150,000 bytes (4 to 6 average screenshots), and please do not post animations (though it's fine to post a link to them). We also ask that you limit smileys on this observation thread - no more than three to a post, and less is usually better. Thanks!

Jeff Krieger of Alternative Wildlife Solutions will be chiming in with more information - and I'm looking forward to learning a lot more about owls!

2013 Nesting Season Highlights

eggs laid: around January 10 (link to Feb 7 photo of eggs taken through window)

cams on: February 13

eggs hatched: around February 14 (pieces of shell seen; first glimpse of a chick; three chicks seen at 6:43 pm)

hatching update - #1 - Feb 13, 5:20 pm; #2 - Feb 14, around 10:20 am; #3 - late Feb 14 or early Feb 15 (the link above actually shows two white chicks and one slightly shinier white egg, so the third hatch was after 6:43 pm Feb 14) - see forum/viewtopic.php?topic=470098#470098 and forum/viewtopic.php?topic=470147#470147, and also forum/viewtopic.php?topic=468073#468073

A bit of background:

Victoria's Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (WildARC) received a call January 10th regarding an injured owl, and referred to Jeff Krieger of Alternative Wildlife Solutions to asses the situation. A Great-Horned Owl was located in a planter box on the fourth story of a local Victoria building, not injured at all but incubating eggs in her makeshift nest. To verify this, a quick search by Jeff confirmed his suspicions; pellets scattered under the nest site, and a male roosting in a tree 50ft away - What a unique oppotunity for a webcam!
