WELCOME 2013 SEASON!

Welcome to this thread. Most of the pictures posted early on were of Ma & Pa Stalashen and their offspring but we have discovered other nests so pictures/comments are posted of them.

Please stop by and say Hi. If you visit any of the nests in Sechelt you are welcome to post comments and pictures here.

Stalashen Nest

We have been watching this nest in Sechelt from our living room, through a telescope and binoculars. My husband saw that the nest was being used several years ago but we didn't see the eagles there again until 2008. We have been following it ever since. We have talked to a few of the people living close to the nest and they said that it has been there over 20 years. Unfortunately, it did blow down in July 2009 after a windstorm but we are happy to tell you that the eagles have built a new nest. When the nest blew down one of the eaglets had branched and the 2nd one was fine also, the eagles fed them on a branch before they fledged. We look through our telescope at this nest which is about a mile and a half away. We can only see them clearly in the morning or evening due to the glare from the water and thermal interference.

Nests in Sechelt:

1. Stalashen Nest -

2009 - 2 eaglets not named
2010 - 1 eaglet Sunny
2011 - 1 eaglet Bluster June 21 Bluster branched
2012 - 1 eaglet Pacer June 27 Pacer branched
2013 - 1 eaglet Hydan June

2. Chapman Nest located on Sunshine coast Highway (Highway 101) - no confirmation of eaglets this year 2011. No confirmation of eaglets 2012. We see these eagles fly over our house and head down to the nest which isn't far from the water.
2013

3. Kinnikinnick Park Nest- no eaglets seen, not being used right now 2011. No eaglets seen Ma & Pa spotted in trees near the nest July 2012.
2013

4. Porpoise Bay Nest (blew down but we will have to look to see if they rebuilt - I did see eagles flying there a couple of weeks ago). Eagle seen flying in the bay January 2012.
2013

5. Seaview Nest (it is close to Seaview Lane) on Highway 101 this is in West Sechelt - 2011 - 2 eaglets seen. No eagles seen there January 1, 2012, Adult in the nest June 2012.
July 26, 2012 one eaglet/juvie spotted on the edge of the nest.
2013

6. Shoreline Nest - 2011 - 2 eaglets seen. Two adults spotted in the perch tree nearby January 1, 2012.
One eaglet spotted June 2012. Two eaglets spotted July 2012.
2013 - Unfotunately this eagles' nest tree was topped! I spotted this in February 2013. Mitigation process supposedly in the works!

7. Marsh Nest
2012 - 2 eaglets seen July.
2013 - 2 eaglets seen Sea and Shell

Nests in Gibsons:

1. Chaster Nest
2011 - not being used right now.
July 2012 - 2 eaglets seen
2013 - - 2 eaglets seen Prince & Abby

It was a thrill to view both eagles and the nest through Marg's telescope after seeing her pictures posted here. On leaving the house we returned to the nest to get a GPS reading: Lat 49.4380*N, Long 123.7186*W, Alt 13 ft. Dave tried getting a picture with that but dusk was starting to fall and it wasn't bright enough. Another time!
Thank you Marg and Earl! Looking forward to more outings together.

Unfortunately, this nest was taken down by the homeowner but a new structure was erected (by the homeowner) in another tree not too far from the old nest tree in the hopes that the eagles would nest there.

Happy New Year friends of this thread.Smile

We went for a walk today and visited the Marsh nest but no eagles seen in the nest tree or surrounding area. We headed to the Shoreline nest but no eagles seen in the nest tree - one mature eagle seen near the top of a tree about 1/4 of a mile away from that nest (heading towards the police station in the village).

We then headed to the Stalashen nest where we saw Ma or Pa on a branch of the nest tree this was about 2:50p.m.

Off for a walk in Mission Point Park where we saw an Sitting eagle at the top of a tree, it wasn't long before a juvie flew in and chased that eagle off and perched there!Grin

The 4.5 eagle :dunno: flew further down the beach and landed near the top of another tree, here it is.

A while later the juvie flew off but I don't think I was able to get a pic. We talked to a couple on the beach who know of Hancock Wldlife and visit on Facebook. The District of Sechelt are erecting a "viewing platform" in the park near the edge of the creek and have already put in concrete footings. I can't wait for that to be completed as it will have a fantastic view.

Nice to see eagle activity in the park Marg. Not a lot of that last year. That viewing platform is interesting. We haven't heard about it in the media.
On Monday when I was in Sechelt without my camera I spotted an adult sitting in their stand of trees in Porpoise Bay, beside the flat topped one we've seen them in before. Let the season begin! Clapping
