From the wildlife center of Virginia

BALD EAGLE #10-1887: On August 28 the Center received a call about an adult Bald Eagle that was spotted sitting on a log in the Bullpasture River near McDowell in Highland County, Virginia. The bird appeared listless.

Madis Leivits, the Center’s Intern for Veterinary Diagnostics, and Sandy Strilec, a vet student from Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island, went out and successfully captured the eagle.

The eagle did not survive the trip back to the Wildlife Center. The eagle was given a patient number [#10-1887] and examined by the Center veterinary staff. The eagle was thin; tests found high levels of lead in the bird’s blood, although radiographs found no shot.

I found this story of a Golden Eagle rescue and thought it interesting.....written by Ms. Randy Brady of Utah

On a rural two-lane hi-way, we came around a bend to find several cars pulled off the road and a crowd of people gesturing at something in the road. As I approached, I could see that it was a Golden Eagle, standing on one leg, stunned and unable to move himself out of harms way. I came up behind him, gently covered him with my coat and picked him up, taking care to cover his talons. People were yelling; “He’ll tear your face off”, “How dumb can you get?”, “You touch him you go to jail!”

Thinking, "So, put me in jail, I won't stand here and watch him get hit again." He was so big, his tail feathers protruded over the gearshift and his beak rested on my right shoulder. He soon began to shiver, then struggle. It took all my strength to keep him from getting loose in the car. My cat slunk under the drivers seat while my two labs sniffed him and judiciously retreated to the back seat. Unable to get a signal on my cell, we took him to the nearest town, hoping to find a Game Warden or Forest Ranger. Two towns, four stops and three hours later we finally turned him over to Martin Tyner, Falconer and Director of Southwest Wildlife Foundation, who said the eagle was a three year old male. Martin provided me with these pictures.

Cautionary Note for All Readers:

While Randy’s rescue story is incredible and not one we’ll soon forget, readers are cautioned to use extreme care around wild animals who can be quite dangerous when put into a fight or flight situation. Always attempt to reach a wildlife rehabilitator for guidance in order to protect yourself and the injured animal whose condition could be inadvertently worsened despite good intentions.

Poor spring blamed for affecting sea eagles
Three fewer white-tailed sea eagle chicks fledged in 2011 than the year before, according to the latest breeding figures from RSPB Scotland.

Bad weather in May was thought to have been a factor behind the dip, from 46 to 43, with some nest sites damaged by the stormy conditions.

However, 2011 did see an increase in numbers of territorial pairs with 57 compared to 52 last year.

The raptors are the UK's largest bird of prey.

After becoming extinct in the UK during the 20th Century, the eagles were first reintroduced to Rum in 1975.

They can now also be found in Fife and Aberdeenshire.

Projects to encourage birds to establish territories on the east coast have attracted controversy.
