Nest History
This nest is at Xcel Energy's Fort ST Vrain Power Station in Platteville, Colorado. It is in the mountain time zone. The 6 foot nest has been used by a variety of eagle pairs. The cam was installed in 2003. The eagles have raised
3 chicks in 2006
2 chicks in 2007
3 chicks in 2008
3 chicks in 2009 The nest failed in 2009 Snowstorm and absent parent.
2 chicks in 2010
2 chicks in 2011 2 of the 3 eggs hatched. One was inviable.
3 chicks in 2012 The nest failed in 2012 Middle chick was stuck and died of hyperthermia. Storm of over 2" of rain in a short period of time caused the other 2 chicks to suffer hyperthermia also.
3 chicks in 2013. The youngest hatched 4/1 died on 4/16. One of the chicks that was hatched on 3/29 died on 4/17. There was a snowstorm that lasted 3 days. The wind and snow caused the chicks to die most likely from hyperthermia. (report in next post)

eggs laid #1 2/27 #2 2/20 and #3 2/23
chicks hatched #1 3/29 #2 3/29 #3 4/1
#1 died in snowstorm on 4/17 #3 died in snowstorm on 4/16
#2 The surviving chick fledged on 6/15/13 ( there were reports that it fledged on 6/12, but Survivor could be heard near the nest and
most likely branched elsewhere in the nest tree. Survivor was on the nest soon after)
Eggs are usually laid mid to late February and hatch in late March. They have usually fledged by early June.

Eagles usually begin nestorations in early October. Last year cam did not stream until February, but stills were posted earlier.

All streaming is out of the Raptor Resource operations in Decorah, Iowa. We thank them for streaming this nest for our viewing.

It is with a sad heart that I report the loss of the youngest chick and one of the older chicks on 4/17/13. The younger chick most likely died on the 16th as I did not see it move after 3 p.m. The nest area had snow from 4/15 to 4/18. Accumulations of 14 to 16 inches were reported. The parents diligently covered the chicks each night. There were several feedings. The snow and cold were just too much for the two chicks that were 14 and 17 days old.

Rest in peace and soar in the heavens Hercules and one of the older chicks. We have one survivor that is being well-fed and mom has been on the nest at night. We are calling the remaining chick, Survivor.

It began to rain on September 9. The monsoon flow from the SW continued to bring storms until September 15th. The nest tree is along the banks of the St. Vrain River. This river was above flood stage for 5 days. The area around the tree is under 5 to7 feet of water. The cam equipment and solar panels have been significantly damaged. They will assess the damage when they can. At this time we do not know if there will be a cam at this nest next season or not. Xcel Energy had supplied the damaged equipment.

I heard from Greeley Joe today. He fixed both cams in October and everything was operating smoothly. He is not sure when the cams will be streaming live. He said the sound was great too. So we will have to wait.
