Sequoyah 2013 - National Wildlife Refuge near Vian, Oklahoma

http://suttoncenter.org/pages/live_eagle_camera

There are two cams, streaming but no sound, giving different views of the nest.

The nest is in the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge, near Vian in eastern Oklahoma, near the Arkansas border. This is the Sutton Center's second nest with a cam (their original nest cam features a pair that nests about 125 miles away, at Sooner Lake in north central Oklahoma). The cam page above shows two views of Sooner Lake and two of Sequoyah.

The pair laid three eggs in 2011, though one disappeared before the cam came online. The two remaining eggs hatched, and both chicks fledged successfully; the younger was given a GPS transmitter, and you can follow his travels here.

In 2012 three eggs were laid and hatched. Sadly the youngest passed away at 39 days old during a spell of rain and sleet. The young eaglet did not have feathers and therefore couldn't insulate itself from the elements and died likely from exposure. The other two successfully fledged.

(Thanks to Alan Jenkins, Assistant Director of the G. M. Sutton Avian Research Center, for the background information)

    2011-2012 Recap:

    • cam online: by September 12 (initial posts on 2011 thread - here) Note this cam is online year round.
    • eggs laid: December 17 at about 4 pm; December 20, 4:29 pm; seen December 24, ~7 am (laid overnight)
    • hatched: January 24, 10:47 am (38 days); January 25, 12:56 pm (36 days); January 29, 4:38 pm (36 days)
    • sad news: #3 died, probably from exposure, March 8, early morning, at age 39 days; he or she was behind in development (though mostly holding his own and getting plenty of food), and unlike the older eaglets, did not have feathers to protect himself from the rain and sleet overnight. His body was fed to the remaining eaglets the evening of March 10. Rest in peace, young one.
    • branched: #1 4.9.2012 at 7:49 am.
    • fledged: #1 4.14.2012 (81 days); #2 4.17.2012 (83 days)
    • last seen: Tuesday, May 15, 2012. The next two days, there was an eagle on the branch, but could not be identified as one of the juvies or one of the adults because of the distance and then only a very small part was seen on the CU cam.

Summary for Sequoyah Nest from Oct.18, 2012..Jan.13, 2013.

Cam came on Oct.18, 2012.. WE all had the pleasure of watching Mom and Dad Seqouyah getting their nest ready, mating and having meals on the nest..
First egg was laid Dec.9, 2012 at 4:42pm and Sec. egg was laid overnight on Dec.12, 2012.Mom and Dad took turns incubating their eggs.. all was going well for this nest.....

Dec. 25..Snow storm...Cam was down until Jan.2, 2013.

Jan. 2, 2013... We started to see a difference in Mom and Dad's behaviour.. they were upset, leaving the eggs unattended for up to 15min. at a time.. Mom and Dad would both be in the nest in defensive mode...looking at sky a lot and tracking something out of our view..

Jan.3.. Things took a turn for the worse.. Intruder eagles were actually flying on the nest in an attempt to take over the nest.... resulting in Mom and Dad leaving the eggs unattended for longer periods of time.. chasing the intruders out of their territory... the days were warm and the eggs would be incubated for long periods at a time during the day and always at night.
.
Jan4 -6.. No cam again.
.
Jan.7.10.. Things got progressively worse for this nest... eggs were unattended for longer periods of time with Mom and Dad off defending their nest and territory ..resulting in the eggs hardly being incubated at all and exposed to cold temp..esp at night .

Jan.11.... Eggs were alone most of the day..Mom and Dad did visit the nest, doing little or no incubating of the eggs... it was clear that there was no chance that the eggs would hatch.

Result..Failed Nest...sad

I think this is dad in the nest. He has been here for 20 minutes watching over the area. I like seeing into the bowl of this nest.
