I'm wondering whether or not O.W.L. has some thoughts about the Delta O.W.L. nest. In 2009, the eggs did not hatch. According to observers who closely watched this cam, one of the eggs had pipped and there was a baby eaglet in the egg, which was eaten by a crow.

This year, we saw pips in at least one of the eggs. The pip is very clear in the remaining egg. When we first saw the pip, the egg was on time for hatching. But the eaglet didn't make his way out of the egg. Why? Perhaps jewill could ask this question at the wildlife center.

Hi Beans!
We have been discussing it around OWL and the basic consensus is: we just don't know whyPuzzled
It could be several things, like inadequate nest, or there may be something wrong with 1 or both parents (although I personally think that's unlikely because they make it all the way to the pipping of the egg so obviously they are doing something right). IMHO it is something to do with the environment, possibly pesticide poisoning, that is interfering with the development of the egg, or more precisely the egg shell. It would probably be caused by Faith's diet - she is eating food contaminated with some type of chemical. I base that opinion on the fact that we currently have 2 eagles in rehab who are recovering from poisoning (1 lead and the other unknown), and those are just the ones that we can confirm. Like I said, I am definitely no expert, and the preceeding is my opinion only and does not represent any official position from OWL.

Meanwhile, a reminder to locals: Open House is tomorrow (Saturday April 30) and Sunday (May 1). It has been positively confirmed that an eagle will be released on both days. The release will be at 1 pm each day so if you are thinking of attending make sure you get there by 12:30 at the latest. Parking will be absolutely nuts, and we have permission to use both the pre-school and DCLS lots so grab the first spot you see and walk down to the back of the property where OWL is. I will be there on Saturday only; I don't yet know where, but I will be wearing my name tag so if you see me please come up and introduce yourself.

And let's remind everyone to NOT use any kind of pesticide, especially rat poison. Rat poison means a slow, painful death for the rat and also for the Red-tailed Hawk (or other predator) who eats the rat. Better to use traps.

Okay PatB or Bev - I have this problem with a racoon and her babies don't know how many babies nesting on my property and I would like to have her and the babies relocated to Stanley Park our building is very close to the park. Who do I go to to help me out in this matter? Would it be O.W.L. Please advise me by e mail as I am a regular and usually follow the eagles, but this is a Racoon removal and rescued not killed.

Judy, OWL deals with raptors, you could try the Yellow Pages, there are several listed there, including humane removal.
