Blackwater NWR Eagle Cam

The camera has frequently updating still shots, and uses infrared technology to provide "night vision." During last year's nest season, the cam was turned off from 11 pm - 3 am to reduce bandwidth expenses. We expect the same for the cam this year.

The nest is located in the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge on Maryland's Eastern Shore. This is one of the first nests to have a cam, and has been online since 2005. The pair has successfully raised three chicks in 2005, and two each from 2006 through 2010. The pair successfully raised three chicks in 2011.

In 2012, tragedy struck at the nest on February 26, 2012. The eight day old chicks were killed by an intruder eagle at the nest.

This year we have fingers and talons crossed for a wonderful year for the Blackwater parents!

Based on past experience, look for eggs in mid to late January, chicks in mid February to early March, and fledging in mid to late May.

2012-2013 Season:

adults in area: Eagle on Osprey nest on 12/14/12

cam on: Due to replacement of cam and technical issues, the cam was not functional until 1/27/13

eggs laid: When the cam was activated, Blackwater Refuge reported that 3 eggs were in the nest! Our resident eagle expert, JudyB posted that based on the fact that Blackwater reported no eggs on the 20th, the first egg was probably laid late on 1/20/13 or 1/21/13. Based on an average of three days between eggs, the second was probably laid on 1/23/13 or 1/24/13 and the third on 1/26/13 or 1/27/13.

hatched:: First: February 26, 2013; Second: February 27, 2013; Third: March 4, 2013

On March 10, 2013, Blackwater Refuge announced that the 3rd eaglet was gone. The tiny one hatched long after its siblings. There was very little rivalry and lots of food, causing Blackwater Refuge to opine that he may not have been real healthy. Blackwater Eagle Cam Log Update 3-10-13

In late April 2013, Blackwater Refuge held a naming contest. The winning names are Talon (the oldest) and Soar. Here is Blackwater Refuge's announcement. Naming Announcement

first time out of nestbowl:
first branching:It appeared Talon was absent from the nest on May 14, 2013 during the day. Also, she was absent during the evening hours and that was announced by Blackwater Refuge. Visual confirmation of a branching occurred the morning of May 15, 2013.
Visual Confirmation of Talon's Branching

fledged: It is difficult to know just when Talon took her fledging flight. She was out of the nest most of the day on May 16, 2013 and on the 17th, Blackwater Refuge posted that they believed she was flying. Soar took his first trip out of the nest on May 18, 2013. There was no sighting of him on a branch, but he may have branched rather than fledged. Because no visual on a branch, I'm setting this date as the fledge for now.

And, Blackwater Refuge has reported on its Facebook page just this morning (September 19, 2012) that we have at least one eagle at the osprey nest (now that the Ospreys have left for the season). Could this be one of ours?

I look forward to watching the Blackwater Refuge eagle pair this year. I can't wait to see all of you that watch along the miraculous journey with us each year. hug

So, put your eagle cam watching kits together and get ready for some long, cold nights in January as we await the first egg!!! Very Happy
