Welcome to the 2013 Season of the Dunedin Osprey Cam!

The nest/platform is located on the Pinellas Trail near the Dunedin Stirling Links Golf Course in Pinellas County Florida.
The location is perfect because this is a heavily used trail for walkers, joggers and bikers. This makes for easy viewing from the ground for the public. Since education is a major part of this project, its location is easy for school groups, scout groups, etc. to visit.

2012 Summary:
Eggs Laid:
February 17, February 20, February 23.
Eggs Hatched:
March 27, March 30. Third egg did not hatch.
Lost Chick 2 overnight April 14.
Chick Fledged:
June 6 @ 6:47am

2013 Season:
Eggs Laid:
#1 Egg - March 16, 2013 around 3:10pm
Cam angle makes it hard to see the eggs - second egg not confirmed until April 15

Eggs Hatched:
#1 Egg - maybe April 24, confirmed April 25
#2 Egg - April 25
#3 Egg - April 27 (quite a surprise as no one had seen three eggs)

Sad News:
#3 died May 4 - it's not easy for the youngest chick to get enough food to thrive
#2 disappeared late May 7 or early May 8 - he/she seemed less active on Tuesday so may have died of natural causes or lack of food, but the nest notes say there's also a chance one of the chicks was taken by a predator
#1 died June 10 after being removed from the nest for banding; the chick was small for its age, and might have had a weak heart; a necropsy is planned to determine the cause of death

Fledged:

As a courtesy to viewers with slower internet connections, please limit the pictures in each post to no more than a total of 150,000 bytes (150KB), and please do not post animations (though it's fine to post a link to them). To avoid horizontal scrolling, please do not post pictures that are more than 500 pixels wide - though it's fine to post a 500-pixel-wide thumbnail that clicks to a much larger picture. The forum attachment software conveniently handles that task - so you can attach larger pictures, and a properly-sized clickable image will appear in your post. The preferred format for pictures is JPEG (.jpg), and three 500-pixel-wide JPEGs should be under the 150KB limit.

Good Morning All!
The City of Dunedin has been working hard to improve our cam for better viewing. There have been some glitches in this process, but the cam is up and running. They added a microphone so now we can hear the birds at the nest. In doing so they tried to change their format of streaming to an axsis cam but it was a hit and miss as far as being about to connect. As a result they went back to the original means of streaming, but the view we see is smaller than before. I have been talking back and forth with Sparky giving my input on this and hopefully they can get the view enlarged for better viewing in the near future!

One big change is that they moved the camera off the nest and have it on a pole not far from the nest. I think the cam is at a higher level and the view should be as good if not better. Also the remote control has been tightened up so we shouldn't have viewers moving it to watch the cars and people at the golf course instead of the birds as it was intended for.
The following are pictures from the information posted at the Dunedin cam:

11/26/12 - The city of Dunedin moves the camera further away and above the nest to provide a better view for this season.

I checked in at the cam this morning and captured one of our ospreys at the nest. Not sure if it was Mom or Dad, but I am thinking Mom! With the streaming back as it was last season, there is a time limit for viewing and then you are "kicked" off and have to refresh. I'm hoping they can get a different streaming format to illiminate that problem!

I keep checking in daily to see if our osprey are getting ready to lay eggs for the new season. So far nothing more has gone on there.
