Thanks for your response, terry.

Has the Delta pair had any success in fixing the hole in the floor of the nest, where the big chunk fell out...was that in January? Now the rest of the nest seems to be coming undone.

This pair did such a good job of nest building and incubating last year. I was sure that 2010 would be the year of their first successful nesting. Now I really hope they do not lay eggs and try to raise eaglets in such a precarious nest. It is worse that Delta 1, at this point.

My questions about the female's ability to refrain from egg laying arise from the experience with Delta 1 last year. There was no preparation for laying, so I wonder if the need and urge to lay was overpowering and the female just took the first nest that looked intact.

Of course, Dad could have brought sticks and build up the sides while she was incubating, but that didn't seem to be his strong point.

I think Pa Sidney should fly over to the mainland and give seminars on nest building to those guys in Delta. Do you think they would show it on HGTV?

found this partial explanation .... from a birdforum.....

A better term might be "gravid." in most birds, it only takes a day or two fro a released egg to come down the oviduct, receive its yolk, and then have the shell laid down. In most birds the "incubation patch" (also called a "brood patch" devleops prior to egg-laying.

The best way to telll if an individual bird is about to lay eggs--which often happens before dawn--is to watch its behavior. It usually will builtd and line the nest first, and then lay eggs within a short period of time after that job is complete.

.... If the female is pregnant (does that word apply to egg laying animals?)

Hi wave This is the first time I've watched this nest since last year. Sure don't miss that spider .Evilgiggle I'll start checking back to see what kind of action has been going on. I sure have big hopes for these two. Maybe they learned from last year------ too early is not good. Also I'm seeing the nest isn't being repaired Sad Well-----I guess the young have to learn. We're so used to watching Hornby and Sydney. We can't compare. Reading back I see a racoon in the nest . Doesn't that make life scary. Oh My This year could be quite a challenge for these twoExclaimationExclaimationExclaimation
