A new school year,
And a new class
Of enthusiastic grade 3s,
Where better to learn
About Nature
Than in our own school yard?

Looking for interesting things
To explore
And draw
On the ground.

Now what could that be?

It's surprising what can found
When we look closely.

During a pleasant walk to Elizabeth Lake
On an unusually warm September afternoon,
Someone called to us
To check out a bug,
Which landed on his arm.

We were amazed
How many shrimp we spotted
Swimming by the outflow to the lake.

We had an adventure
Exploring among the giant cattails.

As we crossed Troll Bridge
We heard some sounds below.
Could it be the Troll
Or some parents
Playing a joke on us?

The lake was so still and peaceful.
Then we heard the sound of geese.

We played
The Web of Life,
Supplying the names
Of plants and animals
That can be found
At Elizabeth Lake.

Wow, you are already out seeing and learning about nature. I've really enjoyed seeing your pictures of Elizabeth Lake and the critters you saw. Troll Bridge looks like a fun way to cross over the water. I wonder what that cool bug is. Your drawing is terrific showing the many things you saw and learned about. Thank you for sharing with us. We look forward to seeing more of your adventures and also the projects you work on.
Thanks SMW!

Hi Annie,

Thanks for writing to us. We think the bug is some kind of stink bug.

Today we reflected on some of the things we had seen or heard during our trip to Elizabeth Lake. Some of us included ideas from previous visits. Then our teacher spoke to us individually and asked us for one idea each to include in a class web.

Yesterday we walked beside Joseph Creek, while Ms. Nahm's grade 4 class found out more about the bugs that live in the creek. They discovered that some water insects live under rocks. They also learned that a creek's health can be determined by examining the different kinds of bugs they uncovered. We are looking forward to being involved in Creek Science next year.

Creek Science (http://www.mainstreams.ca/uploads/KindColl.pdf) is a program available to students in grade 4 to 6 in our School District, and classes can book their field trip with them through Wild Voices For Kids (WVFK).

"We saw lots of Joseph Creek. It was fun because we went to lots of fun, exciting places like Wilson Island. It was very fun. I might even take my parents there."

"I learned that sometimes birds eat the pine needles off of the trees."
