Good morning. Whew! Lots of discussion here about the cam.

I have a question. If a camera was installed with a protective lens and cover would that not eliminate the need and costs involved in cleaning the cam annually.?? And if that were possible, then it certainly would be cost and time effective, would it not? And the money saved could be used toward better equipment?

I am not sure, but I don't think I have ever heard of the Hornby cam being cleaned annually. I am not sure about the other cams either.

I understand that many people who contributed to this cause are very bruised and upset because they feel didn't get what they paid for.

I don't watch the cams much. I do like to view others' screen caps and videos and comments and I rely heavily on that when planning nest trips.

I hope to get out there for a look-see later this afternoon as I have other business in the area. The tides are high so there probably won't be a beach visit. I'll let you know ASAP if both Ma and Pa are in situ. Talons crossed.Sitting eagleSitting eagle

The cameras are all in housings that have glass in front of the actual camera lens

It is this glass that has to be cleaned.

Whether a camera needs cleaning at any given time depends on many things:

Weather - the whole year

Amount of polutants in the air

Amount of "poop-shots" that get to the camera

Angle of the camera (pointing down gets less rain than pointing level)

Proximity to the nest (close gets more chance of poop-shots)

Number of spiders in the area and whether the birds eat them or leave them

Random factors like falling branches

then there are the technical problems that require a site visit in any case - Both Hornby and Sidney have suffered cable problems - Hornby by falling tree limb, Sidney by corrosion in the connections.

We expect to visit a site annually. If, at the point where the eagles have left for the season, the camera is working fine and no obvious viewing problems, we may simply skip it as a bonus that year - but so far that's only happened once to my knowledge - with Sidney in 2007-8

Thanks Richard for that explanation.

Eagle in the nest. Looks like Ma. She just tried out the bowl!

( having trouble getting a screencap; it's been so long since I did one)

Dang! She's gone.
