I was about to turn the cam off when I caught this great look at what a baby heron face looks like under that Rod Stewart hair! VERY interesting!! I'm sure this is one of the older chicks.

Bad storm with hail, thunder, and lightning at the nest during the night. All chicks and both adults are fine.

This is amazing. I saw that this nest was coming on but since my Dog and gee my screen name are after Blue Herons and most of my family (brothers, father, uncle, etc.) went to Cornell, was trying not to get involved in another nest. Too late.....wow,
so clear. Now need to read back and see where it is. You can delete this post since off topic.
Thank you Mary - you and Nancy have some gorgeous captures.

Carolyn, great to see you! This GBH nest is in a pond in Sapsucker Woods and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is right there. Their website Allaboutbirds is one we use all the time for bird IDs and facts, so this is just a real bonus. The Cornell lab also put a cam in a RT Hawk nest at the athletic fields on Tower Road on campus. I enjoy the GBH nest because of the uniqueness of them. You would definitely feel a great bond with them. There are 5 eggs, all hatched, all healthy. There is a Great Horned Owl nest not far away which has caused some problems because the GHO has made attempts to kill the adult herons during the night on about 5 occasions. These Herons are very interesting. You are absolutely NOT off topic. A very dear friend of mine was a professor in the hotel studies dept. at Cornell. Small world isn't it!

ETA: Cam went down at a little after 9 and I had to leave at 10, so I am sorry but missed any activity after 9:15 AM.

Thanks Nancy! I sure hope nothing happens with the Great Horned Owls hurting the Herons. We had a ton of heron nests fairly near me which have been relocated for many reasons - convinced them to nest elsewhere.

i will follow this nest as I can as it is right "up my alley". I did read back and got the history and can envision it as have been up there to Ithaca multiple times.
