Fowl Friendly

Hi everyone,
I just joined the forum today because I came across this thread! I live over near West Bay marina, and noticed last summer that a pair of eagles were in the area, but I had no idea where the nest was. I saw the pair quite frequently last summer off our deck fishing over in our area. They never stayed very long since the crows and seagulls harrass them like crazy every time! I can tell without even looking out the window when one of them is around because the seagulls have a very different call. I've been trying to figure out where the nest was, I always see them fly off towards DND yards, but didn't know where the site was. I was reading through the Hornby forum and someone had posted that Ma or Pa Saxe were back and I realized that's where they lived!!! So, I went down there yesterday, and found the nest, and saw one of them perched in the nest tree. So amazing!!!! I didn't take my camera with me as I didn't think I would be that lucky very embarrassed

These are a couple pictures from last summer, they never stay long as the crows are always in hot pursuit! Was it ever confirmed if there was an eaglet last summer? I rarely ever saw the pair flying together, so I often wondered if there were babies in the nest.

I'm excited for this season, knowing that this forum exists, and hope we have some eaglets to watch this year!

Welcome Fowl Friendly. Please feel free to post your pictures of the Saxe Pt. Park eagles anytime. The eagles did not produce any young last season, although there have been comments that there might have been eggs. Both Karen and I visit the park and quite often talk to the employees. There were no young in this nest for many years and they produced only 1 eaglet in 2008 and 2010. Lets hope for eaglets next seasonLeft thumb up

Fowl Friendly, I hope you don't mind that I edited your post to enable your pics to be viewed within your post, rather than appearing as a link. When you are composing your post and want to attach a pic, click on the 'File' button in the formatting line and insert the number '1' between the centre brackets without any spaces. Do the same for the 2nd and 3rd attachments using the numbers 2 and 3 between the centre brackets without any spaces. This is what your post will look like:

Welcome Fowl Friendly Cheers Great to see another body on this site Exclaimation

Nice pictures of the eagles flying and being chased by crows Nodding There is nearly always one of the Saxe Point Park eagles sitting guard when I go these days usually between 16:00 and 17:00 in the afternoon and they only left for about six weeks this year. We have to walk somewhere with the dog and live only 6 blocks from the park, so it is easy for me to go there - would not be too bad for you either. Maybe we will meet sometime. I'm the crazy lady running around with a camera pointing up to the nest (could be SassyK as well, of course Titter). I was the one who reported on the Hornby forum that the Saxe Point eagles were back.

I just came back from Saxe Point and there was an eagle in residence!

Carolyn, today the eagle was on a different branch, in fact, almost in the top branches of the tree. It left after I had been there about 20 min around 16:30.

Thank You for the welcome Karen and sassyk!! Great to meet other eagle enthusiasts! I was down at the park yesterday from about 14:00 to 15:00 and was lucky enough to see both eagles standing guard for most of the time I was there Wooh actually the 2nd one that arrived while I was there was probably there for the last half hour of my visit.

Thanks sassyk for editing my pics properly, I'll try to post some of the ones I took yesterday. Do the park employees have any speculation on why they produce so few offspring....lack of food?? I'm really hoping for some young for them this year fingers crossed

I imagine I'll be down at the park quite a bit now I know I have an eagle's nest in walking distance many weekends now, I'm the crazy lady with binoculars in one hand, camera in the other with a look of awe continually on my face, so I'm sure we'll meet one of these days!

When I first arrived, the one eagle was sitting just perched a little above the nest, left for a bit of a fly around, came back to just near the nest, then a few moments later the 2nd one arrived, so the 1st one flew off to the tiny perch of a dead branch while the other sat near the nest. I don't have a zoom lens so the pics aren't super clear, and the 3rd one was the only way I could get both eagles in one shot! Have a great day everyone!! Hello

wave Nice pictures, Fowl Friendly! You could try cropping the picture just showing the eagle which should make the eagles a little bigger and clearer.

HelloFowl Friendly, very nice pics! Yes, I will probably meet you one of these days, while I'm wandering around the park.

If you click the 'Esquimalt Eagles' link in my 1st post on this thread, it will take you to the first post in the 'Esquimalt Eagles' thread in the archived forum. I have copied an article that was in the Victoria News, which explains why there have been so few eaglets hatched in this nest. I lived 3 houses down from the entrance to the park for 18 years from 1971 to 1989 and there were never any eagles seen in the park then.

I went to the park this afternoon and one of the eagles (I think it was Mom) was perched above the nest for the entire time I was there. I didn't see Dad anywhere but a few neighbours said they have seen both of them there during the past week. I'll post some pics in the morningsleepy
