I finally had a chance to look at the whole video...and to ELF!! I'm certainly not David Hancock but my best guess is that this lovely juvie is a second year bird--but not yet quite turned 2. The tail feathers are still dark as is the beak and there is only slight lighter feathering on part of it's head. Many juvies have those pretty whilte body feathers that they no longer have as adults. Just my guess.

It certainly was being bold moving all those sticks that Mom and Dad Davenport placed so carefully where they wanted them. I think it was maybe digging in the nest looking for nestovers and not having any luck when it was pulling thet nest fluff to the surface.


Here is Azalea who is a third year juvie but not yet 3 ..she is from the Norfolk 2009 nest. Her face has a lot of white and there is a lot of white in her tail.

Here is her brother Buddy fron the Norfolk 2008 nest. He is a fourth year bird but not quite 4 yet. His head is well on it's way to being white and his tail is nearly so and his beak is changing.




It's wonderful that we have been able to watch Buddy change and with the help of photographers to watch Azalea as well. Both Azalea and another brother, Camellia (2nd year bird from the 2010 Norfolk nest) have been hanging out in the NBG near the nest for quite some time!

I think this is a bird is a one year old since their coats often appear speckled and I have seen the dirty head start to take shape as early two years old but this is just my opinion.

Mary F, Debs, and Lori thanks for adding to this youngster's visit to the nest. I have not seen either adult there today. This has been an interesting discussion. Mary I agree it is a really beautiful young eagle. We don't get to see them in a nest this close up very often......

I really liked seeing the video since it caught the arrival and departure.

7:57 One of the eagles is having breakfast at the nest.

9:18 Eagle is investigating and watchful.

I'm not exactly sure what happened. I heard a lot of calling and trilling and pulled the cam up in time to see an eagle falling off the 7 o'clock spot on the nest just under the big branch and Mom came ripping in from the upper right part of the nest in chase of the other eagle. I think we had an intruder eagle!!! Lots of eagle noise later but no eagles on cam. (about 5:20 PM nest time)
