From David Hancock:

Our new Victoria Nest is only new to our cam: the site has been occupied for many years and we are hopeful that the neighbors will fill us in on this pair's history as time passes.

This nest is located in an area that is not just difficult to view the nest, but the landowner and neighbors are only allowing (and overseeing the cam) the cams on the basis that we do not reveal the nest's actual location. We appreciate your cooperation on this issue. We will discuss the eagles' behavior but not the details of their location.

The neighbor is going to allow our 3 Ground Observers access to his upstairs balcony as the young develop -- an incredible gesture. In the meantime our Ground Observers will be reporting on seeing the pair in their hunting haunts.

In 2011 the pair produced 2 young -- the common number for the past few years. Our only real concern is that the nest tree has few branches above the nest. This meant that Doug, the Dogwood Tree Service climber who installed the cam, had few options for mounting the cam. In fact he only had room for one cam. And our concern is that our PTZ cam may be within the "poop zone" and get slathered with droppings as the chicks grow. The chicks' behavior in defecating is to 'shoot their dropping' away from the nest -- at times 6-8 feet horizontally! Time will tell.

The new PTZ has a 15 times magnification potential so we should have some very exciting close-ups. The control of this will be by Richard, me and possibly one or two others. We know that several of the resting and hunting perches are visible and the rich hunting beaches can be seen in the background.

Thanks to Dogwood Tree Service for donating their time installing the cam -- a great job done without climbing spurs so that the tree was not damaged.

We hope this site will offer some exciting images and that the adjacent hunting area, so incredibly rich in fish and birds and seals, will offer great opportunities to our ground observers to take pictures and make observations.

The marine history of this area is incredible. These beaches were the haunts for many years by both the white killer whale, named Moby Dick, and the sea serpent, Caddy. The peregrine falcons constantly use this point for hunting. As we were installing the cam a flock of 94 turkey vultures soared over the nest in a single group. Hopefully some of Victoria's historians and naturalists will give us details of life and history around Trial Island.

Harry Johnson, one of the local Ground Observers, a few years ago captured a fine series of images of the female of this pair carrying a well eaten seal pup from the Trial Island beaches to the nest. Please enjoy our Victoria pair.

With thanks.

David Hancock

PS Richard will have the site up and active in the next few days. We have the cam and mic reading at the house but not yet fully wired into the house and to a new Shaw Cable installation that is to arrive next week.
