Eagles4Kids-Blair Wisconsin-Bald Eagle Cam

http://eagles4kids.com/

This is another link to this cam on USTREAM--http://www.ustream.tv/eagles4kids

This is a streaming cam, but doesn't have sound or night vision. It does provide a good look into the nest and a view of the fields beyond.

The nest is in Blair, Wisconsin, which is in the western part of the state, not too far from the border with Minnesota and Iowa. The interesting thing about this cam and website is that it is a project of the third and fourth grade classes at the Blair-Taylor Elementary School, in conjunction with the National Eagle Center. See their Eagle Camera Project Updates page to see all the work that went into the project (the most recent update is first, so scroll to the bottom to read the story from the beginning). Please note that some of the information on the "Student Eagle Facts" page is likely the result of the class's research on the internet at the beginning of the project and should be considered a work in progress - it will be interesting to see how their knowledge grows by the end of the school year, after (hopefully) watching the eagles actually raise an eaglet or two.

2011 was the first year that we watched this pair on camera, and the E4k website says that the eagles raised two eaglets in each of the five years before 2011. Unfortunately, while they spent quite a bit of time at the nest in 2011, no eggs were laid - and it's not clear that the female at the end of the season was the same "Lucy" at the beginning as there was a period when only the male was seen. We - and the students - are hoping for eggs in early March 2012. As we continued to watch it was determined that "Lucy" is a first time mom and a new mate for Larry. Students and observers noted that Larry actually had to show her how to feed small pieces of fish to the newly hatched eaglets. She kept wanting to give them big pieces. It did not take long for "Lucy" to become an expert at feeding and caring for Luke and Lilly.

UPDATE:

Eagles4kids was created by third and fourth graders from Blair-Taylor Elementary School, through a DPI Grant from the state of Wisconsin. The live video feed is shut down until the fall of 2011. The students have big plans for 2011-2012 school year. Search for us on facebook and "Like" our page to continue getting updates!

2012 SEASON

cam on:
.....At least by October 24, 2011

eggs laid: March 2, 4:30 pm; March 5, 6:54 pm

eggs hatched: April 7, 6:42 am (36 days); April 10, 5:20 am

eaglets fledged: Both eaglets were branching on June 17. Luke fledged around June 22 and Lilly followed by the 26th. It was hard to determine exact dates because they were not observed out of the nest tree by ground observers. But on the 25th the juvies were flying on and off the nest and they did not appear to be heading toward a tree branch. I personally believe that Luke was female and Lilly was male. WE all know it is hard to know without tests. However, Luke was bigger than Lilly by the time they branched.

From the site.......

We are a third and fourth grade class from Blair, Wisconsin. Our teacher wrote a grant to have a camera installed above a Bald Eagle\'s nest near our school. Lucy and Larry\'s nest sits above a trout stream in a cotton wood tree, about 60ft off the ground.

About Our Nest

•The nest is approximately 5 feet in diameter and 4 feet deep.
•A pair of Bald Eagles have raised two eaglets each of the past five years in this nest until 2010 when there were no eaglets..

This link will take you to a good history about how this cam came to be...........

On October17, 2011 the cam was re-installed after being taken down for cleaning. A mic was to have been installed but it didn't work!

I am so hoping that Larry and Lucy have eaglets this year. Thanks for all the updates Mary. It is good to see this cam up and running.
