Quote by: AudreyP Quote by: lovethebabiesHi Audrey, it's not the landowners wishes. it is against the law here in Canada to approach an active nest so if a rescue was required it would take lengthy paperwork to process with the government to get approval to approach the nest. It also puts the healthy chick at risk to have people approaching a nest because someone could startle one or both of them into falling.
At this point we watch and hope everything will right itself with our precious baby.
Maybe so, but as indicated in JudyB's post below there's more to it than that.
Quote by: JudyBHi suzcues, and thanks for your thoughts.
Three things come to mind -
First, my understanding is that this nest is in a residential neighborhood bordering on agricultural land, so there is nowhere nearby that I'm aware of with the sort of public access that exists at Patricia Bay, near the Sidney nest. Our agreement with the people who host the camera and the rest of our equipment is that we will do our viewing over the internet and not try to visit the site for a closer look - everything Richard Pitt wrote last summer (forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=262496) is still valid today - if the folks who live there feel that the cam is causing a disruption in the neighborhood, they'll turn off the cam.
Second, while there has been a tradition among some First Nation/Native American peoples of giving back to the eagles, this is not something we discuss or advocate here, in part because leaving fish heads lying around could be considered littering or creating a nuisance if it attracted other animals or neighborhood pets, and in part because not everyone has the best interest of the eagles at heart, and discussing where eagles come to feed could put them at risk.
Third, while some days there is less food than other days, I have seen nothing to suggest that these eaglets are at risk. This pair did a fine job last year, and I expect they'll do just fine again this year. We have a great team observing the nest, and we have experts to consult with if our experienced observers are seeing a problem - as we are doing now with Goldwing.
I do thank you all for your support, and your concern - and apologize for using your post, suzcues, as a starting point for responding to a number of related questions and comments over the last few days.
And like everyone else, I do hope we see a couple of good meals before long.
Excuse me but this is not the Sidney nest this is the Delta2 nest and it is situated on the mainland of British Columbia near the Tsawwassen Ferry not Vancouver Island as stated..... if anyone reads this and doesn't know the area or where the nest is located they will be all off track. Heres a little history of this nest....
"About the Delta 2 site – near the Tsawwassen Ferry.
This was originally a red tail hawk nest, rebuilt by bald eagles in 1998-99. Then when the eagle nest was disturbed by somone climbing the tree, it was abandoned. The adult eagles moved, to be the first local pair to nest on a nearby high tension power line tower. The red tails re-occupied the site for a couple of years until they were attacked by the eagles which have, as of the 2010 season, again rebuilt the nest and produced two young that season.
This is a super large tree with strong branches and should serve as a nest for many years to come. We had installed two cams in 2006 but, when no red tails or eagles used the nest in 2007 or 2008, we removed the cams for placement in the Delta OWL bald eagle nest. Autumn 2010, at season end, we again installed two cameras. One of the cameras, the controllable one (PTZ), has subsequently lost its control interface, likely due to some poor weather we had recently, and is aimed poorly. The other however is aimed directly at the nest and we present this camera to you for your nest watching pleasure."
date and time on scapes
both Lets are sleeping
one Let sleeping... 1 Let preening or standing up
Lets up and down they seem like they are hungry...I have taken a scape of one of them eating the plastic for evidence.... one is pecking at the plastic bag trying to eat it
This is where my problem comes into affect the poor eaglets having to eat that plastic...it is sooooo bad for them they probably have plastic entwined in their crops and throats argh no wonder they are sick and lifeless

omg, sassyk....that pictorial series between linux and gw...what a crack up!
NEEDED that, becuz it just is so hearbreaking to watch little gw in obvious distress.
especially when in the past, as all of the auntie's have so well documented, these 2 babies
have always been the bobsey boblet's, and mirrored each others actions and postures.
as raining showed (great capture!) earlier, they even sometimes morph into ONE being!
welcome back, raining....hope all went well today!!!
it is so special, the way that all the other nest's and eagle lovers will come together to support a nest in need. i always feel so lucky when someone posts nest news, because that is how i found JET last year.
(when oreo fell out of nest).
i feel guilty saying this, but since last year's events had a happy ending, it has crossed my mind that perhaps it might be in gw's best interest, if little linux kinda....oh.... assisted gw in getting help, by accidentally....stretching his very BIG FOOT....to encourage a super early fledge (AND TOTALLY SAFE LANDING) for gw. THEN, gw could go to OWL. ...just sayin....
last year's 'event' for oreo (i think) happened in early june?
as i'm about to post (5:33 PST) i saw the pics of let's laying down, but as i checked cam, backlet was standing...not sure which one it was...

5:45 pm One 'let looks towards 12 o'clock while standing and other 'let looks towards 5 o'clock or so while laying down. They have both views covered.
Have been watching here and there and reading posts. Wonderful scaps and observations Aunties.
As this is the feast or famine nest, it appears that we are in famine mode right now. Darn. Hope the rodents come out soon. Neither Mom nor Dad look exactly filled out either.
'lets are probably bored waiting for Mom or Dad to come in with something to eat.
6:01 pm 'lets are not snoozing. One is snoozing while sitting and the other snoozing while laying down.
6:03 pm Both 'lets alert. Not sure what they are looking at or listening to.
