Pelican Harbor 2012 - Santa Cruz Island

The parents were both hatched in the San Francisco Zoo (male K10 in 2001 and female K26 in 2002) and then fostered into nests on Catalina Island (K10 in the Twin Rocks Nest and K26 in the West End Nest). K26 laid two eggs in 2006 (one hatched, becoming the female A49 "Cruz," the first eagle chick to hatch in the wild on the Channel Islands since 1949; on Santa Rosa as of February 2009); two eggs in 2007 (one hatched, becoming male A63 "Limuw," who died about 7 weeks after fledging while scavenging roadkill in Nevada), and two eggs in 2008 (both hatched, becoming A65 "Skye" and A64 "Spirit" - both male; both were knocked from their nest by a juvenile eagle when they were about 6-1/2 weeks old, taken to the mainland for rehab and released from a hacking tower; Skye drowned after becoming entangled in a kelp bed; Spirit was on Santa Rosa as of February 2009). The pair also had two eggs in 2009; both hatched, but the chicks died shortly after hatching from unknown causes. K10 and K26 are a strong young pair, so we're hoping 2010 will be better. 2010 was indeed a better - the pair laid two eggs, which hatched to become A69 Malik and A68 Braveheart (both male); both fledged successfully. This pair moved to a new nest in 2011 - probably a good thing as their other nest had developed a distinct tilt; they built a nest in the Chinese Harbor area, then abandoned that and built a nest in a hard to reach part of the Twin Harbors area. They'll continue to be known as the Pelican Harbor pair because that was there first nest. They laid at least one egg (it looked like there were might have been two during a helicopter survey of hard-to-see nests but there was only one chick when the team arrived for banding; A74(F)/Karana fledged successfully and was still on the island as of mid-August.

2011 - 2012 Season:

  • adults return: N/A Our PH pair do not migrate as food is plentiful year round.
  • camera online: This new cam is scheduled to go live late in January 2012
  • eggs laid: March 6, 1:58 pm; March 9, 2:01 pm
  • sad news: one of the eggs was lost; Mom was seen removing the broken egg shell from the nest bowl; March 27, about 3 - 3-1/2 weeks into the incubation period
  • hatched: Remaining egg hatched April 13th.
  • banded: June 10 - A84 (M)
  • named by viewers: Marcus
  • fledged: June 29, 8:28 am (77 days) or (11 Wks)

Tentative Hatch Timelines based on an Incubation period of 33 to 40 days

Egg #1 Laid March 6 2012 - Hatch Timeline April 8 to 15 2012
Egg #2 Laid March 9 2012 - Hatch Timeline April 11 to 18 2012

Note: Many eggs hatch on or around Day 37 however, as you can see from the timeline it may happen sooner or later as per the timeline. The eggs hatch in the order they were laid; generally egg number one hatches on or around Day 37 with the remaining eggs hatching a bit sooner.

This is sort of a good news/bad news post - and an acknowledgement that the line between the two isn't always obvious.

The good news is that if all goes well, we'll have a camera on the new nest for this pair for the next nesting season. As noted, their pre-2011 nest started to collapse, so they built a new nest early in 2011 - and then, once the folks at the Institute for Wildlife Studies figured out a way to get a cam on that new nest - they abandoned it and built a third nest, where they successfully raised an eaglet, totally out of sight. It looked as if we wouldn't have a cam here - it was not in the budget for IWS - but Bette, a long-time member of the CHIL forum, which supports the IWS nests, and one who had watched this pair since the beginning, donated the money to install a cam for the 2012 nesting season.

The sad news is that the donation was part of Bette's desire to do what she could, while she could. She passed away today from brain cancer, after living several months longer than anticipated, and surrounded by love.

Rest in peace, Bette - and thank you. hug

I saw this posted on the CHIL forum this morning:

Work is beginning this week on the new Pelican Harbor cam and upgrades to the Sauces cam. Sauces will probably go off-line today for an undetermined amount of time.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new Pelican Harbor cam - and happy to hear that they'll be upgrading the Sauces cam! Smile
