This nest was featured on the Nature show "American Eagle" - and now you can watch it live!
The nest is in Decorah, Iowa; the exact location is not publicized to protect the eagles. Local time is Central time. The pair has been observed since 2002, but 2009 was its first year online. They successfully raised three eaglets in both 2009 and 2010. In 2010 the youngest eaglet was 7 days younger than the oldest and 5 days younger than the middle chick, so newly hatched at the time the older ones were beginning to move out of the nest bowl; we were concerned that it would have a hard time getting a share of the food - but the excellent parents at this nest made sure all were fed appropriately to their age and stage. They again laid three eggs and fledged three eaglets in 2011, and one of the fledglings was fitted with a tracking device - you can follow the travels of D1 here.
Based past experience for this pair, look for eggs in late February or early March, chicks in early to mid-April, and fledging in late June or early July.
2011-2012 Season:
- adults seen: September 7, 2011 (possibly a few days earlier)
- eggs laid: -- February 17, 7:54 pm; February 20, 9:09 pm; February 24, 8:05 pm
- hatched: March 27, 1:53 pm (39 days); March 28, ~9:00 am (37 days); March 31, before 6:50 am (36 days)
- designated: D12, D13 & D14 (per RRP, D identifies the nest site and beginning at 12 honors the 11 known successful fledges from the nest)
- fledged: maybe June 12, 8:25 pm (77 days) (definitely June 13); June 14, 6:38 an (78 days); June 18, 7:31 am (79 days)

D1 (Decorah eaglet 1 with the transmitter) has really been traveling again lately. The most recent locations show that the eagle is west of Duluth, Minnesota. That's quite a distance from Decorah. The folks at Raptor Resource Project should really be learning a lot by following the movement of this eagle.
