Also Known As - Pot Plant Owl

A spotted eagle owl (known as Pot Plant Owl) is a shining example of how animals and birds have had to adapt to man's urbanization and destruction of their natural habitat. With trees and other natural flora being cut down to accommodate the growth of the sprawling metropolis of Johannesburg, Pot Plant Owl was forced to leave its natural nesting habitat and find sanctuary in a pot plant on the balcony of a suburban home. In 2010 she laid 3 eggs in the pot plant, all of which hatched and the chicks successfully fledged. Africam feels this is an important story to tell, so we are putting these owls and their unorthodox nest LIVE on the internet for all to see, 24/7 with night vision and sound.

Pot Plant Owl Fast Facts

I am a spotted eagle owl
Due to urbanization in Johannesburg, and the cutting down of the surrounding trees and natural flora, I was forced to nest in a potted plant on the balcony of a house in Johannesburg, South Africa.
My nesting season is August - December.
I have my own Blog that you can follow HERE - Owl Blog
You can watch me and my 3 chicks live HERE - Owl Cam

This intro obtained from their excellent Page on Africam - Potplantowl

Pot Plant Owl laid the first of her three eggs for 2010 on August 21st; it's been cooler than usual this year, so while the owls have returned and appear to be preparing to nest, the first egg was not laid until late at night on August 29th. The camera was turned on shortly thereafter.

2011 Season

  • eggs laid: August 29/30 (late at night); September 2 (seen 12:52 pm); September 5 (seen about 7 am)
  • hatched: October 3; October 5; third egg didn't hatch
  • named: Merlin and Timka
  • fledged:

Pot Plant Owl nests! 30 August
30 August - we've just woken up to find Pot Plant Owl in her nest. She's alert and nervous. Any movement catches her attention as her head swivels from side to side.

The webcam will be up and running shortly - watch this space!

Have you tried going to Africam's home page? Or the facebook page?

I'll see if I can find anything once I get home.

The egg is still uncovered - good job it is fairly warm!
