I just got the following message on the cam stream:

I already knew that the cam wasn't streaming as expected, but am wondering if the speckled bird is a fledgling - I clearly need to do a bit of homework! It does remind me of the feather pattern on an osprey chick - and upon reflection, these eagles do seem related to both our bald eagles and our osprey.

And the cam is back!

Not sure about sea-eagles, but with bald eagles, the first thing a chick does as it begins the hatching process is break into the air sac at the end of the egg - and start to breathe - and peep. I believe that triggers the other changes that enable it to absorb the yolk and detach from the network of tiny veins inside the shell - and eventually to hatch! Once it's broken into the air sac (the internal pip), it begins working on the external pip, or initial hole in the shell that ensures a supply of fresh air while it makes its way out of the shell.

I don't remember what the average time is between internal pip and the initial visible hole - but do know that the chick can peep as soon as it begins to breathe. Smile

Both adults were on the nest, and I admit I was so busy looking at the eggs that I didn't notice if there was a swap, though I suspect there was.

Another link to a pair of sea eagles calling. You can hear someone snapping pictures in the background.

From the live chat:
It usually takes a day or more to be fed by the parent as they have been adequately nourished. And then in a day or so we will see the first back up out of the bowl and the infamous PS!

I think I'm going to have to start watching - thanks, elfjune!

I think the reason Anna's hatching date s'cap changed is because she attached it as File 1, so when you quoted her post, it picked up your File 1 with the new date. If that makes sense. Smile

Yes that makes sense. I've never done a scap on a reply that already had a file. Computer programs, very literal. Grin

August 13, 11:37 am in Syndey

Another exchange - not sure who is who yet. Both eggs still looked intact. The incoming adult rolled the eggs, but didn't seem to pay special attention to them (as she/he might have done if a chick was peeping away in there).

I don't know about this family, but with most eagle and osprey nests I watch, the first egg hatches a couple of days after the due date - so it might be a day or two before we see anything more exciting than what we've been watching so far. But that is "most" - I have seen eggs that hatched exactly as scheduled. Smile
