HelloSher, Very pretty area where the eagles are and I love that picture of the parent with Sunset
and Ocean. Your timing was perfect and so glad it was.
That is so sad about the pigeons and just not right. I've had a couple come with broken feet and one
with a wing that hangs down. I always wonder if it's genetics or if some nit wit has hurt them. The
Center sounds like a wonderful place. Why are the fawns there? I hope there isn't anything serious
wrong with them!
I'm glad you liked the fun questions..........I had a lot of fun reading your responses.

HelloAnnie,

I have often heard people refer to pigeons as flying rats. I know they mean this in a pejorative way, but I rescue slugs, and worms so it is hard for me to see any animal as unworthy of life itself. I certainly have big issues with anyone who kills animals either for sport (i know this is not a popular stance - but I have trouble seeing the sport in it when one of the creatures has its life on the line and the power differential is so great) or because someone has decided the particular animal is a nuisance. I once read a great Sci Fi story in which we were considered the nuisance. I'm not sure if you have seen the movie The Day the Earth Stood Still - it has a similar plot-line.

The fawns are there for various reasons - the oldest because it was attacked by 2 dogs and injured. The other three, which all still have their spots, I am not sure. If you would like I could ask, as I am there volunteering tomorrow morning..

It was fun to playgiggle

Hello Sher

I'm the same about any living things, even flies which I just can't stand...shooing them outside can be
difficult....kinda funny since we have the 'bug' man here on a regular basis. Anyway, the dog attack on the deer is awful and how frightened the poor thing must have been. Yes, I would be interested to know why the others are there. I'm not sure I've seen that movie but the title is familiar.

Killing for sport is no sport to me. You can't change hunters, but we could sure change the law. The bear website I spoke of and what happens with bears thanks to hunters would really get you up in arms. They have a number of radio-collared bears for research and hunters will shoot them despite the fact that during hunting season they have bright-colored ribbons on them. June, one of the bears was recently shot by some sort of small ammo (pellet gun maybe) right in the face. Her left eye is healing thanks to antibiotics but her vision is impaired. She is beautiful...it is so sad that anyone could do that.

This is Faith whose birth I watched earlier this year. Her sibling from last year Hope(watched her birth also) and mama Lily are safe and together as of now.

Good Night friends.....

Annie, I too watched the bear site and found myself so upset sometimes that it was difficult for me. Hunting (while I understand their perspective) is just against my grain. Golly, I even put spiders outside rather than let my cats kill them! (Now cockroaches are another story) My hubby does not mince words either so I value his opinion.

Watcher, I like what someone called you the other day "Woodsy One" and might do that with your permission? It is kind of cute. I hope the fawn attacked by the dogs recovers well. Your face resonates the joy of your life there in B.C.

Jas, you are such fun to share experiences with - your perspective is always upbeat. Bleu sends you a hug.

That's all folks - catch you in a day or two!

"Woodsy One" - I like it. Reminiscent of my childhood when I spent every waking moment unless I was in school in the woods.

Matching Donation Opportunity Extended!

One of the things that I love about our forum and website is that I'm always learning new things. One of the things I learned today is that Mondays are very busy at Hancock House, so not everyone who tried to call in a donation using our 800 number was able to get through. Another thing I learned is that I need to be a bit more organized about coordinating schedules when working with people on both sides of the North American continent.

I've been in touch with the person who is offering to match up to $1000 in donations, and she is willing to extend the offer through tomorrow night (Tuesday, August 9th). That will provide an additional day for people to call in their donations to 1-800-938-1114 (toll free in Canada and the United States, but for donations only - the staff is not involved with the web site or cameras) - and will provide a full day to donate to our friends who follow the nests on facebook. While Tuesday should not be as busy at Hancock House, there are only two phone lines and a small staff, so please be patient when calling the 800 line.

You can also use any of our other Five Easy Ways to Donate to Hancock Wildlife Foundation - both CanadaHelps and PayPal accept credit cards, and you don't need to set up an account to donate.

It is worth mentioning that we will still need some additional major donations even if our two-day drive is a rousing success. It will cost $12,000 to buy and install the pan-tilt-zoom cam we need for Sidney, and possibly another $6000 just to get the rest of the cams cleaned and serviced for the upcoming season. If you know a person or a business who might sponsor a cam, please get in touch with Karen Bills (karen at hancockwildlife dot org).

All our eagle families - and their friends - thank you!

Thank you all for your support!

Hi Sher, they are lucky to have such a dedicated volunteer. In my twenties, I volunteered and worked at a wildlife rescue place in Burnaby. If anyone ever finds injured wildlife, they can take it there. Check out their website http://www.wildliferescue.ca. They take eagles but sometimes will transport to OWL depending on their case load and space availability. They are also key players whenever we have an oil spill. They treat birds as small as hummingbirds to ones as big as the albatross. There is staff but they rely a lot on volunteers too. So Sher kudos to you for donating your time to help out there on the Sunshine Coast
