A few people have mentioned flutterbys, so I thought I'd mention something that may increase your appreciation of them.

It seems their jagged flight patterns aren't clumsiness or confusion; they're actually in total control of each "sidestep". What they're doing is 'sample sniffing' with their antennae. They get a fix on the sources of various scents by getting quick comparisons at slightly different positions, and then track down the ones they want. Sort of "stereo smelling".

I may drop in from time to time from Eagleholics Anonymous but chatting on one nest is usually all I can handle! Wooh Unless our tree falls down at Sydney and we have to confiscate a nest in the area. Grin By the way, we don't bite over there....but may nibble a little from time to time. Whistling

May all who nest here enjoy the camaraderie and wonderful friendships that will develop. Wub

I was just in my garden when I heard some familiar calls. I look up and see Sitting eagleSitting eagle adult baldies flying overhead, calling their tunes. To the untrained ear, it would go unnoticed but I have heard those cries before and thought of Davids talk on the urban bald eagle. So I was wondering where this pair calls home. I know there are a few nests here in Richmond but still pleasantly surprised and delighted to see them flying together over my house to bootClapping Just thought I'd share my morning garden sighting. Somehow telling noneagle addicts is not fun. They don't get excited the way we do. So IThank You for yourSitting eagleWub
I hope you all enjoy your Saturday

That's pretty neat information on butterflies, Brian - many thanks. Now I will look at them differently. We have a lot here in Texas.

Hi Gord! Good to see you.

Lest I forget, Bev, that was a beautiful plop!

Watcher, I cannot figure out where our pileated woodpecker is this year.

Jas, I know what you mean. If I dare say that I "watch eagles nests" I get this strange look like - "Are you nuts?"

Watcher ~ Fun at your potluck dinner? What was on the menu? I do love a good potluck.
The feeder you found is really a good one. We have Pet Smart which usually has a variety of feeders.
Next time I'm there I'll check on their feeders. I'm hoping they will have some good advice about the
pigeon problem. There were so many downtown that they were being poisoned and that, for me, is
not a solution.........they're birds too!

I agree - about the pigeons I mean. Oh the shame

Had lots of fun at the potluck.
This was a group that I hadn't met with before so it was invigorating to meet so many new and interesting people -
a lawyer, massage therapist, herbalist, musician, teacher, mother, gardener, writer, and those are just the vocations I can remember.
As usual everyone brought terrific food - a Cesar salad with bacon and one without for those of us who are vegetarians;
a spaghetti casserole made with ground almonds (by me); a meat palow (sp?); a fruit salad, a toss salad (you can tell it is summer with all the salads);
chicken; scallops wrapped in bacon; and much more.
For desert we had a flourless chocolate cake with homemade raspberry rémoulade. It was awesome.

Of course I ate more than I should have but that is half the fun of being at a potluck.

Sweet of your friends to drop by. You sounded quite excited.

Good luck with the pigeon problem. I know how to stop them from roosting places but not how to keep them away from a feeder,
