Who's Who

There are many people who help keep the forum running smoothly and/or contribute to it in various ways. Of course everyone who posts is a contributor - but there are a number of people who have agreed to take on additional responsibilities - and we'd like you to know who they are and what they do.

Content Providers are generally those who report on local eagle nests or other wildlife in their area. They generally have a thread (or several threads) where they post most of their pictures and descriptions - and they keep an eye on the other posts on their thread(s) and would let the Forum Assistants or Admins know if someone was behaving badly. Some of them also provide general information - about the areas they visit or the type of camera they use - or where on the forum one can find the Panda threads - but general knowledge about the forum is not a requirement.

Forum Assistants birdofprey, sandra gee and soph9 are also Content Providers, as is Admin gemini. (Not all Content Providers have made their way over here, and some don't have their new threads set up yet - we expect there will be more threads in place as things start to get more active at the nests. Note to Content Providers - if you need help getting set up - or if you have a new user name - please let me or one of the other Admins know. Thanks!)

Topic Assistants generally oversee a forum, or group of threads or topics on a related subject. It's usually an area they are interested in, and they are a resource to new people visiting that forum - both because they know a bit about the topic, and because they know others who can provide more detailed information. They also have a general idea of the content/layout of the website as a whole. We don't expect everyone to know everything - but they generally have an idea who to contact to find the answer to a question.

Forum Assistants soph9, CJ and gemini also function as Topic Assistants; soph9 focuses on Raptors Other than Eagles, CJ focuses on African Wildlife, and gemini focuses on H. W. F. Goes "Wild" in the Schools. Content Provider Debs also functions as a Topic Assistant for Other North American Eagle Cams.

Forum Assistants have a similar role to the Topic Assistants - but they skim the entire forum, stopping in those areas that interest them. I think most of them have areas where they spend much of their time, functioning like a TA in some of those areas. But they also often have learned how to do more things - like split a thread into two parts if it's getting too long. Because the options here are different than on the old forum, we're still not sure what sorts of additional tasks some of the Forum Assistants will take on.

Site Admins jkr, Pat B and I also serve as Forum Assistants, and Content Provider Debs also serves as a Forum Assistant when she has a free moment, though she stays mighty busy watching a whole lot of nests - both live and on cam.

Admins do more of the technical work of maintaining the forum as a whole. They are the ones who can create new forums, set up groups of users such as "Topic Monitors" and give them the ability to edit threads in the forum they monitor, and help people with issues around their ability to log in. They're also the ones to contact if someone is behaving very badly, or if you discover that in spite of our best efforts, someone managed to register and is busily posting spam or worse. Sharon/gemini, Judy/jkr, Pat/Pat B and I/JudyB are primarily forum admins, though we can do some things on other parts of the website; ostrich provides backup for the website as a whole.

David Hancock/davidh and Karen Bills/karenbills are also technically admins, though they are all more involved in Hancock Wildlife as a whole, and the vision behind all this than in the day-to-day details of running the forum. David Hancock serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Foundation and Karen Bills is the Project Coordinator for HWF.

We are looking for more people to become involved - both in the roles above and doing other things like finding/writing articles for Wildlife News or tagging some of our content so it's more visible to search engines. Richard has set up an area called New Volunteers with a lot more information about some of the options.

If you have a bit of time and would like to learn a bit more about how all this works - please let us know!
