In May Lafarge requested suggestions for the naming of the Harbour Plant eaglet. Thanks to everyone who took the time to come up with some very thoughtful and creative entries.

We are very pleased to announce that the winning entry for our contest was "Tenas Chakchak" (or "Tenas" for short). Translated, this means simply 'little eagle' or 'young bald eagle', and is from Chinook Jargon, which is the mixed language that original settlers to British Columbia used with the aboriginals to conduct trading and communication. It is a mix of English, French and the native language of the Chinook people. We chose this name for its local historical meaning, and because it is inclusive, representing our present day multicultural community.

Beautiful and colorful photos Martin Left thumb up, thank you so much! I love the splashes of the "salmon" color in the background and the "red" color on the nest. Not too sure what the red thing is though Don't Know. Sure hope that plastic blows off soon.

Darlene, thank you for posting the pics.

"Tenas" means small or little in the Chinook jargon, and "chakchak" refers to an eagle (referring to the sound of its call).

There's a fair amount of info available online regarding the Chinook jargon for anyone interested. A few Chinook jargon words are part of the everyday vocabulary of British Columbians, though their use is now rare:

"mowitch" = deer

"tillicum" = friend, as in "he's an old tillicum of mine"

"chuck" meaning water

"skookum" meaning big or important or good

Thus "skookumchuck" as in Skookumchuck Narrows means "big water", and "the saltchuck" (perhaps the most common of these words today) refers to the sea.

"Tenas Chakchak" is a very good name for an eaglet!

Somebody at Lafarge is keeping the flame of Chinook jargon alive.

Morning Lafarge wave Grin

On July 1 my hubby, sister, niece and I visited the nest area. We perched ourselves in the park directly facing the nest. We had a good view of the nest Grin even without our camera and binoculars....Cool We did have fun finding the nest too Titter~~we drove right by it three or four times sigh sign until we finally parked and explored on foot to find it Rolling on floor laughing

While we were there~Mom Wub was perched on the artifical new nest Grin and Tenas Wub was in the nest. While we were there Tenas Wub did a few wingercises and flaparoos too which was pretty cool Whistling~~she looked amazing and very strong!!. Mom called out several times for Dad while we were there but we never did get a visual of Dad. At one point Mom was scoulding a sea gull that got a wee bit too close to the nest Left thumb up.

My niece works for Lafarge and this was her first visit to the nest area~~ not sure who was more excited me or my niece Grin. We spent a couple of hours at the park near the nest and many local residents warmly welcomed us Thank You and of course we discussed the Lafarge eagle familiy with everyone we met. It was a bit cloudy and overcast the day of our visit but the weather cooperated and I got some really great pictures! I am totally happy with envy to those of you that live so close to this wonderful family Wub!!

Will post some pictures tomorrow.
