Clark Fork River MT - Bald Eagle Nest

The three bigger ones have been exercising their wings at times. Joker wisely hunkers down in the nest to avoid being smacked. That seems to be the pattern. It is still so remarkable to have four live chicks. The three older ones are a little hard to tell who is who, but baby Joker is definitely the baby and easy to spot.

There has been a regular delivery of food the last few days but not a large quantity. It appears they are just a bit on the hungry side. They happily tear at the food while the parent leaves to move on to other activities. Seems like they are more interested in getting fed right now than stretching their wings.

I did see one of them actually "fly" from one side of the nest to the other side. More like a hop, but the eaglet was airborn for a second. I expect them to be up in those wonderful branches wihin the next week or so.

Your report is much appreciated, Sue. Grin

Good to know that at least one of them is getting a bit of air time and that Joker is a savy sibling.

This news is a few days old, but this is the first chance I've had to post. On June 16, the power went out. There was a fawn carcass on the power line somewhere near our house. We didn't see it but it was in the news and in several papers. Evidently, one of our parent eagles attempted to bring the carcass home to the kids but dropped it for whatever reason, and it landed on a power line and draped over it. The power company had to come out to remove it to restore power. Our eagle parents sure are finding whatever food they can.

Still plenty of room in the nest. It's the best possible arrangement for such a big family. We hope to see fledging soon.
