Metra had flown off and I'm pretty sure I see a pip in the egg!

I would rather spend my life close to the birds than wishing I had wings

5:55 am

6:13 the wind is worse....yikes making me seasick. I've not seen Metra listening and looking down at the bowl as I'e seen other eagles do during a hatch but I sure wish she'd stand up!
6:20 oh good grief I think she's going back to sleep, don't do that cause I'm falling asleep
6:33 still tucked in, wind is howling and I'm fading
6:50 nope
7:20 nu-huh
ohhh a huge gust of wind just woke her up! Phooey, she just looked around and right back to tucked in

8:22 she's preened every feather and still not stood up!
8:40 am great... now she's back tucked in, guess I'll be sleeping my entire Saturday morning away cause I aint giving up now! Twice she's made a move that I recognize when something is going on below them

9:13 - 9:15 am
Just as I was cleaning pics off the hard drive she got up and left the nest for two minutes. Still didn't see anything worth noting. I marked her tail, they have the most beautiful shade of blue on their tails. The only thing I can see that would warrant the 'spotted' in their name is that the head feathers are tipped in white I suppose giving a spotted appearance. Unless there's some other reason. Also I didn't see her look at any pray so it doesn't look like Madis brought anything on his earlier visit. I sure don't see much food on this nest  That better change when the eaglet arrives

well that answers that!
Spotted eagles are a regular winter visitor to the region and the adults are relatively unmarked looking simply dark from underneath especially in strong sunlight. Which begs the question - why then are they called spotted eagles? Well the name quite accurately describes the juveniles which have bold whitish markings mostly on their wings and back.
