FLEDGEFEST 2011 - THURSDAY, JULY 7TH

If you plan to attend, please register here: FledgeFest 2011

On behalf of David Hancock, it is my pleasure to announce that FledgeFest 2011 will be held on Thursday, July 7th. As in previous years, David and his assistant Karen Bills will be on the 9am ferry from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay and will arrive at the Sidney nest site between 10:45 and 11:00am. Members usually gather at the south end of the Sidney nest property on West Saanich Rd. at approximately 11:00am (or earlier if they wish) to meet, greet and get acquainted with new members, as well as renew friendships with members they have met at previous FledgeFest gatherings. Maps of the nest area are provided in subsequent posts.

There is a strip of grassy area (which is municipal property) along the south fence of the Sidney nest property where members can set up scopes and tripods to watch and photograph Ma & Pa and their eaglets. This area is not maintained by the municipality and long pants and sturdy shoes are advisable, as the grass and thistles are sometimes 5 ft. high, and the ground is very uneven. We are very aware that Mother Nature has a mind of her own and the weather can be very unpredictable at that time of year. Layers and a rain jacket or poncho are a good idea, as is a hat and sunscreen if we are blessed with a sunny day.

There is limited parking space available along West Saanich Rd. opposite the south fence and parking is not permitted further up West Saanich Rd. where the nest is viewable, as there are bicycle lanes along both sides of the road. Parking is permitted on Tanner Park Rd., which is the side street around the corner from the south fence. It is a short walk up the road to view the nest, as many members have done in past.years.

For members coming from locations other than Vancouver Island to attend FledgeFest, here are the links to websites where you will find the ferry schedules between mainland BC, Washington State and Vancouver Island:

BC Ferries
Black Ball Ferry Line
Washington State Ferry

More information and maps will be provided in the next few posts. Please do not post your questions or ask for additional information here; a new thread has been set up in the Sidney Eagles forum for members to post their questions and request information here: FledgeFest 2011 - Thursday, July 7th

FLEDGEFEST 2011 LUNCHEON AT MUSE WINERY

I am pleased to announce that I have secured a reservation for our FledgeFest 2011 luncheon on Thurs. July 7th, at the Muse Winery, in the Municipality of North Saanich. A specific time for the luncheon will be announced at a later date; although in past years we have gathered at the venue at 12:30pm. The Muse Winery is a 5 minute drive up the road from the Sidney nest and is a beautiful site nestled in the countryside.

I have been working with the owners of the winery for the past few months to establish a menu and an affordable price. They provide 3 and 4 course group luncheons in their Bacchus Room, complete with wine tastings and tours of the winery and vineyard. We have decided to drop the wine tastings from the group luncheon menu as many people do not consume alcohol. This will reduce the cost of the 4 course group luncheon from $30 to $25, plus 12% HST and 15% services, per person. It has been requested of the owners that each member attending the luncheon will be provided with their own individual bill at the end of the luncheon.

The group luncheon menu at Bistro Muse consists of the following:

4 Course Island Harvest Table Luncheon
Price includes room, tour and lunch - $25 per person (plus 12% HST & 15% services)
- The Muse Salad with orange sesame dressing
- Choice of a hearty tureen of our Seafood Chowder or vegan Red Lentil w/mixed pepper soup (gluten free)
- An assortment of flatbread sandwiches to include Chicken, Pesto & Comox Valley brie, Honey ham & Qualicum spice
- Veggie & Salt Spring Island goat cheese
- Includes a plentiful basket of local artisan breads w/Bistro Muse butter
- Happy Ending of your choice:
Big Bold and Bodacious dark chocolate truffles infused with Muse Syrah
A concoction of local berries topped with our homemade buttery crumble

Ice water and coffee/decaf/herbal teas are included in the luncheon price. Also available will be small bottles of San Pellegrino (regular, orange & lemon) at an additional cost of $2.00ea. A cash bar (wines by the glass) for those who wish to enjoy a glass of wine with their lunch will also be available.

The luncheon is being catered by Douglas Stuart of Stonestreet Cafe and Catering, in Sidney and Saanichton. Here is the link to their website: Stonestreet Cafe and Catering

Anyone wishing to partake in a wine tasting is free to do so, and patrons are permitted to purchase a glass or a bottle of wine and take it to the table to consume with their luncheon. If patrons pay $5 for a wine tasting and purchase a bottle of fabulous award-winnng Muse wine, the $5 is deducted from the price of the bottle of wine. The winery has a liquor license for wine which permits patrons to consume wine anywhere on their premises; however, beer is not permitted to be consumed in the Bacchus Room unless our group pays for a liquor license.

Muse Winery has a wonderful gift shop, in addition to their well-stocked tasting room. I have included the link to the Muse Winery website where you will find an abundance of information on their winery, vineyards, family and the resident eagles, who have a nest on the adjacent property. The owners of the winery have a scope set up on their patio for patrons to enjoy a close-up view of the eagles.
Muse Winery

Please do not call or emal the owners of Muse Winery with questions regarding our FledgeFest luncheon; there is a separate thread set up in the Sidney Eagles forum for that purpose. We look forward to a wonderful time at Muse Winery following FledgeFest on July 7th, chatting with members and enjoying fantastic food.

This map shows the route from the Swartz Bay ferry terminal to Towner Park Rd., which is the side road where parking will be available across from the Sidney nest site. The map includes driving instructions and times/distances, for those members travelling from mainland BC to Vancouver Island.

This map shows the area on West Saanich Road where members can view the nest. It is a short walk from the viewing area at the south fence. There are bicycle lanes on both sides of the road and not much room to stand around, but you can definitely get some good views of the nest.

Here are a few maps of the area surrounding the Sidney nest site, in the District of North Saanich.

This map shows the overall area, including the beach, the driveway and grassy strip at the south end of the property, where members gather for viewing the nest and the eagles, and Towner Park Road, the side street where members can park their vehicles.

This is a map which shows the route from the Airport Travelodge in Sidney to the nest site. Cross over the Pat Bay Hwy. on Beacon Avenue, continue on past Galaran Rd. to McDonald Park Rd., continue on McDonald Park Rd. to Mills Rd., turn left onto Mills Rd., continue on Mills Rd. to the corner of West Saanich Rd. where you will see the church and cemetery on the left, turn right onto West Saanich Rd., continue on past the First Nations Reserve, continue past the north end of the beach, and around the curve in the road to Towner Park Rd., which is the first road on the left. For those out of town visitors who might decide to stay overnight, here is the link to the Airport Travelodge: Airport Travelodge in Sidney

Here is a map of the Muse Winery and Bistro, which is on the corner of Chalet and Tatlow Roads. There is limited parking on the winery property; however there is parking along Tatlow Rd. just past the entrance to Muse Winery, to the left. At that end of Tatlow Rd. there is a path down to the beach where the eagles sometimes perch in the trees. There are also a few parking spots along the side of Tatlow Rd. to the right just past the entrance to the winery, if there is nowhere else to park.

Good news!! There is at least 1 eaglet in the Muse Winery nestClapping I took this picture on Wed. June 15th.
