This is a draft outline for the new forum. We will probably start by setting up the areas for some of the more active threads, and will be adding others as the need arises.

The current forum will be gradually closed over the next 4-6 weeks, but will remain available on a read-only basis, so nothing will be lost.

Please note that this is a draft - and comments and suggestions are welcome!

Helpful Terminology

* Category - top level, like "Eagles" or "Raptors Other than Eagles" on the current forum; unlike the current forum, you can't put threads in a category - only forums.
* Forum - middle level, like "General Information - Eagles" or "Owls and Osprey" on the current forum; unlike the current forum, you cannot have subforums in a forum - only threads.
* Topic - another name for thread

Please limit discussion on this thread to suggestions for changes in the general way the forum is set up.

This forum doesn't allow us to nest forum inside other forums - so we can't have:

  • Eagles

    • Hancock Cams

      • Sidney

the way we do in the current forum. This will make the index a bit longer - but should also make things easier to find.

We do reserve the right to delete posts in this thread once we've finished discussing any particular topic, so when we're done we will just have a completed site guide and a couple of supporting posts.

Thanks!

Could the 'Private Forums' be integrated in to the Forum Volunteer Area?

I suspect this will be a good oportunity to 'cull' (by not setting up) threads that are not really being used.

Good suggestion, Terry. I think we won't need as many work areas or private forums as we have now, and the basic intent is the same - to allow people who are doing a little more to discuss issues related to their work for Hancock Wildlife.

Thanks!

Humm I am quite confused by this, Judy. When you have a moment, could you please go here

http://www.glfusion.org/forum/index.php

and explore a little bit. It seems to me that this forum IS set up in a 'hierarchical' format that looks and feels exactly like we have on our current fourm. What am I missing? Why can we not do this?

I may also be missing something, Terry, but looking at their site:
here's what I see - Categories (Site Information and glFusion) with Forums under them (like News & Announcements under Site Info and glFusion Support under glFusion).

What I don't see is any Forums that have SubForums. If you look at our current website:
Eagles is a Category, like Site Info and glFusion on their website, and General Info - Eagles is a Forum with threads, like their News & Announcements - but Hancock Live Web-Cams is a Forum that contains SubForums like Sidney, each of which contains threads.

Does that make sense, or am I missing something?
