"Ken Dial is a professor in The University of Montana's Division of Biological Sciences and an internationally respected biologist who specializes in bird evolution and the mechanics of flight. He has been the keynote speaker at NASA conferences and meetings of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots -- in large part because of his studies on how birds change the shape of their wings in flight and the differences between small and large bird flight behavior."

"Scientists want to know everything the birds eat. That includes fish species the parents bring to their expected offspring from the Bitterroot River."

"For decades the nest had been on a 12,000-volt power pole on the roadside edge of the ranch for decades. Now it's on an isolated, 45-foot cedar pole in the middle of the ranch's exercise area."

Report from H .Langner..
Here is what I know about Harriet and Ozzie: We don't have definite data as the adults at Dunrovin Ranch are not banded. Harriet may have been at Dunrovin for a number of years, but I think the male changed early in the breeding season of 2011. The female started with one male, before all birds disappeared for several days, and then the female showed up again with a different male. I suspect there was some event such as them getting attacked by an eagle where the male either got killed or driven away. We will never find out

Time Line.. 2011. .... Documentation by Irish Eyes...

Cam on....May 11, 2011.

Two eggs were laid .. time and date unknown..

Two chicks were seen on June 16, 2011... nest bowl is very deep... making it difficult to see egg pips or when the eggs actually hatched..

C 48 and C 49 were banded on July 9, 2011..they were still fairly small, 746 gms each... rec'd from H. Langner

Fledge Dates
Chick# 48... Aug.12 , 2011.
Chick # 49..Aug. 13, 2011.

Chick # 49 has leg/foot injury..Aug. 13, 2011.

Sad News//Chick # 49 has died

Report from H. Langner...
C49 later died after being found standing in shallow water of the Bitterroot River close to home. I have 9/20/2011 for a sampling date, although I don't remember when it actually was found and died. Our guess is that it injured itself on a dive into water that was too shallow.

C 48 - September 12, 2011
