Osprey Cam Link
(Note: I don't see the cams using Firefox but do with Internet Explorer; have not tried other browsers. One cam is online now, the other is expected to be added by mid-April.)

The webcam is recording a pair of mating Ospreys on the Grand River in Breslau. The eggs should arrive soon and incubate 4 – 6 weeks. The young Ospreys will stay on the nest 2 ˝ months before migrating south. These birds are one of the most active and interesting raptors to observe. Enjoy!

The adults are known as Zeus and Hera. There were three chicks in 2010, with the first egg was laid on 4/27/10 and the first hatch on 6/3/10; all three fledged successfully.

2011 Season:

  • cam on: March 31, 2011
  • adults back: one seen April 2 by wolphie; both seen April 4 by jazzel

s'cap by yalitldevl from June 24, 2010

Thanks so much Judy for locking last season and kicking off our new 2011 Season! love

Thanks also to Reitzel Bros and Asbestos Removal of Breslau, Ontario Canada and Lisa and Bill at birdsofBreslau.com for making the cam possible Clapping

I will be watching the cam and will start putting the date and weather when there's more time spent on the nest by the pair preparing for eggs.

First sighting of the season was by wolphie and I'm posting his pic below

Second sighting was by Jazzel and I'm posting her pic below

In the meantime, did you know that Ospreys...

plummet feet-first up to 40 metres toward a single fish in the water

can snap their talons shut in 2/100 of a second

have a rotating outer toe that can grasp objects from the front or the back

catch and eat live fish only, with few exceptions

shake water off themselves like dogs—in midair

generally pair for life, but sometimes "divorce" if mating is unsuccessful

females choose males on the basis of real estate (nest quality and location, location, location!)

pairs that lose their eggs or young may build alternate "frustration" nests

have been known to use hula hoops, rag dolls and toy boats as nesting material (perhaps they pick this stuff up for the kids?)

will grow accustomed to repeated activities like cars driving by

parents withhold food from fledglings to encourage them to leave

fledged young sometimes visit nearby nests where they are fed by other parents

Read about these and other interesting facts in Alan Poole's Ospreys: A Natural and Unnatural History, Cambridge University Press, 1989

My first sighting was this afternoon at 2:47 PM. The adult hung out for a while just looking around, didn't see the mate

I would rather spend my life close to the birds than wishing I had wings

11:46 both were there then one left, the other is still there being blown around. It's very windy and another cold, gloomy day on the nest

the one in the above shot has a fish, I didn't realize that but it stood with it for a while spreading and closing its wings then flew straight up maybe to the cam to eat
