Yes, Apollo has truly gone fishing.
Some interesting information I discovered, via Tony Hamilton, who told me the first scat of the season is called The Plug...I found it yesterday and have been soaking it in water to break it apart.
Do you all remember watching Apollo EAT all the bits of debris that he licked off of his fur?
I kept watching that, wondering what he found in it. Well, The Plug reveals his last meal and his last meal was all those bits of leaves and grass in his den. And that's exactly what it was full of, and nothing else. Maybe some fur bits, hard to tell as they're now black and not Kermode Cream.
So what is the purpose of eating such dried up debris? Is it the fiber or is it just because that's all he had when he first started waking up?
Interesting.
Thanks for the link to this very interesting article on how white bears catch more fish thatn black bears. I've been searching and searching for the embed code on that video, no luck. If anyone can come up with a link that shows the embed code, please email it to info@bcspiritbear.com and I'll mail them an Apollo card, such a handsome bear! bear hugs, Stephanie

THAT must have been where I saw it! Thanks Pat!
Stephanie, I've been looking all over trying to find a way to embed that video, but so far, nada. I haven't given up yet though.
I had to stop and think a minute on what 'scat' was. I too wonder what the purpose in eating debris off the den floor is? It must mean something or he wouldn't do it.

Thanks so much for checking on the embed code, darn, if you ever see it, please email it to me. I'm just so curious how BBC ended up with that Spirit Bear Fishing footage!

JANUARY 14. 2011
In case BCSpiritBear doesn't get a chance to post her update on Apollo I am posting it here.
Quoting from Facebook:
" I'm sorry to announce that Apollo, the Spirit Bear, has not returned to his den this year. This is a photo of his empty den. Sleep well Apollo, where ever you are"

Keep safe Apollo and with luck maybe we'll see you again next year.
