This is a Summary of Events that occurred at the NCTC Bald Eagle Nest in West Virgina starting on March 16, 2011.

On or about March 16 2011 an intruder male invaded the nest area of Belle and Liberty. This young male intruder appeared to be threatening Belle, Liberty, their active nest and their territory too. Both adults had been taking turns incubating and caring for their two eggs that were due to hatch and everything leading up to this was uneventful.

On March 16 this all changed forever and Belle was suddenly left to fend for herself and her two eggs. Liberty, the resident male was last seen at the nest with Belle on the morning of March 16 2011; Liberty had been incubating and Belle returned to relieve him at about 1130 am. As far as we know Liberty has not been seen since and it appears Belle is now on her own....

This is not an open discussion thread it is intended to be a capture and record the events occuring to Belle and Liberty and their family at the NCTC nest. Observations, screen captures and video footage welcomed but no chat please!

Outlined are the observations posted by our dedicated HWF members while watching this beautiful bald eagle family Wub on a live streaming cam.

Note the face of the clock will be used to identify locations within the nest itself.

Please note that there are numerous screen captures posted daily to coincide with the observations please refer to the discussion/observation thread to view the screen captures.

March 17 2011

12 Midnight to 215 am

Continuous monitoring of the nest. Large crack and a pip seen in one egg during the night and perhaps a small pip in the second egg; Mom was restless up and down frequently during the night; we suspected a hatch may have occurred but no visual of a hatch as it was difficult to see details given it was night time.

6 am
Belle was incubating and brooding on the egg cup area within the nest.

630 am
New chick was seen for the first time; Belle was in the nest caring for the new eaglett and the remaining egg.

630 am to 925 am
Uneventful Belle was incubating and brooding in the nest.

925 am to 1025 am
No observations were recorded on our thread during this time period.

1030 am
A couple of minutes were lost due to computer glitches. Observers thought perhaps
there might have been a switch but not for sure. A computer glitch occurred during this
time period and a reloading of program required so a few minutes were lost.

Adult was acting abit strange flapping wings in the nest and gettng a bit of lift in the air
like a helicopter. No visuals of any disturbances in the area when the adult was doing this
either.

1030 to 1145 am
Uneventful.
Mom or Belle was in the nest caring for the new baby the entire time.
No food delivery yet and no inital feeding of the new baby yet.

1145 am
Mom left the nest briefly then returned.
The new baby `Paddy`appears active, alert in the egg cup
area.

12 Noon
Mom and the baby share some intimate and tender moments; Mom gives the new
baby some alone time in the egg cup area but Mom remains very near observing her.
Mom approaches the new lett and even leans forward and goes beak to beak with
the new eaglett. Paddy seems to know to meet Mom`s beak good instincts demonstrated
by our new eaglett. Our new lett appears to be strong and healthy.

The remaining egg appears intact.

156 pm
Mom calls out and appears to be looking towards 3 oclock.
Then Liberty or another adult eagle lands in the nest.
Most observers thought this appeared to be Liberty although
with a dirty head...obvious dirt stains appearing on his head.

Mom is immediiately up and quickly approaches him as if
to grab any food that may have been brought to the nest.
Mom appears to mantle and is not pleased calling and cheeping at
him.

Mom moved so quickly towards Liberty or the possible intruder
that there was concern she may have stumbled or trampled
the chick but the chick seem unharmed following.

Mom returns to the egg cup area and is protecting Paddy by cowering
over the egg cup area; Liberty or the intruder to the nest remains
near 5 and is standing there quietly. Dark staining is visible on his head feathers
and is captured in many of the scaps posted on our NCTC thread.

Mom continues to cheep, call out and show her displeasure. Her feathers
are a bit puffed up and you can tell she is some mad and making no bones
about it as she tells Liberty off royally.

It becomes apparent that no food is brought to the nest although initially
we thought a fish was brought to the nest.

204 pm
Mom actually lunges at Liberty or the intruder in the nest ...Liberty
does not budge just stands his ground over near 5.
Mom returns to the egg cup area and really continues to whine and cheep
at Liberty or perhaps a stranger not sure.

Not sure if Liberty or the intruder is cheeping too we seemed to be locked onto
Belle`s behavior and the joy of seeing Liberty return.

Mom returns to the nest is calling out and looking
up abit again. Approaches the egg cup area
very upset...poor Mom is calling out..visibly upset by
something out of our viewing area.

Mom is calling out even more and is puffed up
abit; mantled abit.

Mom resumes incubating she is facing 11; then something flew right by the nest
over near 11 and appeared to attempt to land in the nest; Mom lunged at it abit
while remaining seated. Definitely Mom was in defensive mode and protecting her
baby and nest.

Mom continues to incubate in the same position but remains upset is crying
a bit and sheltering her baby and her remaining egg with her body.

315 pm
Mom continues to shield Paddy with her body
peeping and crying at times...Mom is seated up high
in the nest too perhaps the second hatch is occurring.

316 pm
Mom has raised up abit and is now looking down at Paddy.

318 pm
Mom is agitated again calling out in defensive
mode.....and is looking up too obviously something
is very near to the nest. No visuals of any intruders.

can hear movement in the attic too.

337 pm
Mom is looking up towards the attic; no visual of
an intruder but Mom is definitely in defensive mode again.

3:44 pm
There is definitely something around the nest area. Mom is
too upset for it to be anything otherwise.

345 pm
Mom is still standing in the nest near 7;
on alert looking all around and calling out
periodically; there is still someone in the attic
as we can hear them and see movement at times.

3:46pm
Mom is quiet right now...but still is very watchful.

Wind has picked up W 13 kn/hr.

350 pm
Mom seems more relaxed now is preening her
frontal coat feathers.
We cannot see Paddy or PJ or the remaining egg as Mom's body
is blocking our view.

352 pm
Mom called out again. Mom moves over to the egg cup area could
see PJ move; as Mom entered the egg cup area it appeared
Mom's talon got mighty close to PJ.
No sign of Dad yet.

Mom is incubating facing 9 again.
