In spring of 2006 David Hancock introduced us to Ma and Pa Sidney and when this cam went live there were already two baby eagletts Lil and Big hatched in the nest; immediately those watching were captivated by this beautiful and majestic family. Every year since Ma and Pa Sidney and their kids continue to capture the hearts of thousands of viewers, so much so that we all feel we are part of the Sidney Family when we gather together at HWF to watch and share in the lives of this beautiful family.

This thread is devoted to sharing the family tree history of Ma and Pa Sidney and is not an open discussion thread and it will be a work in progress and updated each season or as required. If you have historical information on this family please feel free to send it to me and I will be pleased to incude it here.

Ma and Pa Sidney
The actual ages of Ma or Pa Sidney is not known for sure; neither are banded. However, recently (February 16 2011) a farmer in the area told Elle, one of our devoted Sidney Family ground crew members and a local photographer that he has been watching and observing Ma and Pa Sidney since 1990 nesting in their current location. Is this the same pair we do not know for sure. If we use 1990 as the first year Ma and Pa nested together and that this was their first year to reach maturity (age 5) to produce tha we could safely assume or estimate that Ma and Pa Sidney are approximately 26 years old, however this is only speculation on our part.

The Nest
The nest is located on private property in Sidney, BC on Vancouver Island and not far from the Victoria Airport. This is one of the earlier maps I located from the ole forum (Thanks to Bociany) and a more detailed map is forthcoming.

In 2006 and 2007 the Sidneys' used a beautiful nest that was located in a Garry Oak tree. The Gary Oak tree provided a fantastic view to observe the entire Sidney family.

In 2008 Ma and Pa Sidney moved to a new nest located on the same property and just a short distance from the 'ole nest' and that nest is still being used today. Pictures to be added

2008
In the spring of 2008 Ma and Pa moved into a new nest.
Our fantastic ground crew reporters provided regular updates on the family but we had no live cam.
Eggs Laid: 3; Actual dates eggs were laid is unknown
Hatched: Actual hatch dates are unknown but all three eggs hatched
Names: No contest was held. Jkr and some of our members suggested the names of Sunny and Angel in loving memory of Wendy Bacalar one of our devoted and dedicated members. Harry Johnson a local photographer and avid follower of the Sidney family named the youngest triplet Freddy and all three names just seemed to fit the triplets perfectly.
Fledged: Dates were recorded by our ground crew; July 6, 10, ? 2008
Once the juvies fledged they did visit the original 'old' nest in the Garry Oak Tree as Ma and Pa Sidney used this old nest as a feeding platform to entice the juvies out of the nest. So members and on line viewers were able to enjoy the Sidney Family for the remainder of the season.
Seen in the area till the first week in August.

2009
Eggs Laid: 3 - March 1, at 508 pm, 6, ? 2009
The egg cup area was quite deep so a clear view of all three eggs and the time they were actual laid was difficult to determine for sure.
Hatched: April 8, 10 & 14 2009
Members named the triplets; starting with the oldest to youngest: Breeze, Hero and Tiny
Breezed Fledged on June 27; Tiny Fledged on July 4 (forced fledge) and Hero Fledged on July 7
Note: There were six day age difference between the oldest and youngest lett and the youngest was subjected to much bullying from its two older siblings. However, Tiny proved to be strong and survived. Additionally, on July 4 Hero bumped Tiny and he slipped and fell from the nest balcony which forced an early fledge! Tiny returned to the nest about 9 days later looking strong and vibrant.
The juvies were seen in the nest area till the early part of August.
