Semiahmoo Bay Nest Update, 4-16-10. First photo shows relationship of nest (lower left) to snag tree, where one eagle often is perched while the other is in the nest (second photo) It’s always difficult to find the eagle in the nest (third photo). So far unable to tell if there’s an eaglet. However, no indication that food is being taken to the nest.

Eagles over Birch Bay, 4-16-10. Birch Bay is directly south of Semiahmoo Bay, about five miles south of the Semiahmoo Bay nest. There have been a couple of tsunami watches over the bay in recent years. Clickables

Eagles at low tide, Birch Bay, 4-16-10. Two eagles and some shore birds at low tide in first photo. In second photo, one of the eagles flies off toward the water. Third photo sort of reminds me of two gunfighters staring down at each other. Clickables

Birch Bay Nest update, 4-16-10. We began today about 50 miles south of this location at the Fir Island nest, which has been destroyed so I plan no further checks at that location. The Birch Bay is nest is only about five miles south of the Semiahmoo Bay nest, which I’m monitoring. This nest has been around for some time, but until now I have not been monitoring activity here. What I find interesting about this location is the precarious position of the nest which seems to be balanced on a limb. First photo shows tree where eagle hangs out near nest. Second photo is a close-up photo of the same eagle. Third photo is a close-up of the nest. Clickables

Semiahmoo Bay sunset, 4-17-10. I’ve been lucky to photograph eagles flying into the sunset but not today. I believe the small shorebirds in the bay are Surf Scoters. Clickables

Ed, Beautiful sunset photos! That nest does appear to be situated poorly. I love all the juvenile photos from 2009. I hope you have the opportunity this year to catch some more. I will be checking back. Thanks for sharing.wave

Nest Updates as of 5-10-10:

Over the past two weeks, new leaves have branched out by nests on the cottonwoods and other deciduous trees, making it very difficult to see if eaglets are present. Adult eagles(s) remain nearby all the nests, so I guess there’s still hope.

Drayton Harbor Nest: The nest is almost totally obscured when looking at it from the south. It can still be seen from the north through binoculars if you know where to look. I’ve heard some chirping nearby and adults are usually soaring overhead.

Semiahmoo Bay Nest: This nest is atop a fir tree so visibility is very good. Friends whose house is nearby and can observe the nest all the time report there has been no activity in the past month inside the nest. Adults remain nearby, however. Photos from 5-1-10. Clickables
