Hi Doug:

I’m glad you made it over this way, especially on a stormy day. Enjoyed your photos. I wish the Brants would have been out in force. It’s always interesting to get someone else’s perspective of an area that I pretty much take for granted in knowing where to go to get wildlife pictures. One of the nests is visible from the spit if you know where to look. The other is harder to find. Let me know if you want to see the nests on another visit. -- Ed

Hi Ed * We did see the double decker nest near the road just as you descend to the spit. No eagles at the nest, and it was raining just then so we didn't stop. We didn't really walk the spit, rather we went South along the beach, down to where a bicycle is hanging below a drainpipe. You know what I mean, if you have seen it. Next time I'll walk the spit, and hopefully the weather will be a bit more agreeable. We saw no Brants, but there were birds way out that we couldn't see well enough to identify. We did watch an eagle fly far out over Semaihmoo Bay and attack a white bird {maybe gull}. The attempt was unsuccessful and the eagle returned to a tree above the beach.

Nest Updates, 3-31-10.

Drayton Harbor Nest - Observed one of the adults on 3-30 and again on 3-31 hunkered down in the top nest of the double-decker nest.

Semiahmoo Bay Nest – Mature in snag to north of the nest, but unable to observe any activity in the nest. Not all that unusual. This apparently is a very deep nest, and in the past I’ve seen an adult fly into the nest and then disappear from view.

Stormy sky, 3-31-10, North end snag on Semiahmoo Spit as clouds begin forming. I wonder if the eagle knows bad weather is on the way. Clickables
