It was dark in the woods, so these are grainy {high ISO}.

My friend had seen a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers in the park the day before. We went to the same place and found one there. It was working on a hole in a cedar tree.

Finding a few bugs.

The tail feathers brace the bird against the tree.
Notice how the bark is polished where the woodpecker's tail feathers contact the tree.
This bird has been working on this hole for some time.

Some joggers and walkers with dogs came by and the woodpecker hopped up the tree, out of sight.
