Quote by: MaryforbesThis was one of the first nests that I watched back quite a few years ago. I'm so glad to hear that they are active and that there is an egg!!!! They had such a rough year last year with a horrible snow storm...I wish them good luck this year! I'll be watching.
P.S. I wonder if this is a new Mom?
Interesting question, Mary. There was a report that two eagles were seen within a week or two after the chicks were lost last year, and we were hoping that Mom had recovered and rejoined Dad - but I do remember an instance in Florida where the female was shot - and the male was seen with a potential new mate within a few days. I don't know if they became a pair - but it does suggest that eagles move on faster than we do.
With that as background, I have heard from some people who have watched the nest regularly since the cam came online, and they believe it is a new female, likely a younger one based on the coloring. They included a picture, which does seem to show some brown in the head and tail. I don't remember what exactly that means in terms of age - but I would guess this is her first year as a Mom. Here's the pic (click for larger):

And now I have a question - was it here or Decorah that someone though they saw a leg band on one of the parents?
