Middle Cove beach,Newfoundland
The male delivered a fish to momma osprey, she took the trout and took off from her nest to
a stick close by
and started to eat,the male settled in on the bowl and snuggled down,it appears we have
no hatched chicks
at this nest yet. While the male was off fishing a mature huge herring gull was dive
bombing the osprey
nest with momma in it,i can't see whats going on exactly up there because im 1000
feet away,but it appears
that there must be a juvie herring gull just fledged tucked away somewhere within the
forest in a forest cut gorge
area where the osprey nests which is 1100 feet away from a huge colony of kittiwakes and
big herring gulls,
momma just ignored the onslaught as crows and gulls will dive at them but pull out way
before contact, when the male arrived with the
fish the herring gull ran after him with gusto and papa screamed and cleared out of there
as he's vunerable like all hawk's
when their claws are holding prey, the other birds know that and harass them, especially a
disturbed herring gull
protecting it's young,i wonder how this will play out over the next couple of day's.While momma
was eating her fish
she must have been close to a blue jay nest, the blue jay was screaming dixie and making a
dozen runs at mama,
i love this nest, there are so many birds all nesting in this same gorge that it makes for a lot
of exciting stuff,this was on
Wednesday,i have to go everyday now to observe the day that they start looking down at a
chick,got my fingers crossed.Judy
i'll check on the burnt bird this weekend at Salmonier.

The chicks at Lake Barkley, KY, are getting big! The little one is still doing well - and is 5 weeks old today! Looks like a dismal day at the nest - and while they may not be happy, they are old enough to be out in the rain now.

I have sad news concerning the Wabush,Newfoundland and Labrador osprey. The osprey
was flown from
Wabush to St.John's in a container after been found with burnt feathers alongside a
highway,standing up
but unable to fly.Upon arrival to Salmonier nature park the bird was apparently in shock,
it was standing but
the ospreys ayes were closed with the head bent down.An attendant palpated the keel
of the bird without
it been restrained, the bird was in shock and he was able to determine that there was severe
wasting of the
muscle, two provincial vets were immediately brought in,but before they arrived the attendant
took the weight of the
osprey which was determined male, and it's weight was 964 grams, the percentage of emaciation
was 32 per cent and
extreme is over 25 per cent,a stark different from thee initial report in the news that stated the bird
was overall healthy.
The vets applied a tube down the osprey throat and set up oral lactated ringers for him and they
also had a nasal tube applied for oxyger, they
tried to apply a I.V line but due to the emaciated shape of the bird and the shock it was in they did
not have a lot of
success, the bird was then taken to a dark room and was monitored continously within a well heated
room,this male osprey
perished in four hours.Sometimes we can be tough but nature can really send you a curveball, since i had
such high hopes for this bird to
survive, hearing their ordeal in trying to save this bird knocked me down and brought tears to my eyes,

Awww Gerard, very sad, but as you know ospreys usually don't survive rehab attempts. Take comfort in knowing it wasn't left to suffer:cry1:
