Additional Options Available to Story Editors - Part 1

Posting a story is a bit easier if you're a Story Editor - with the advantage (and disadvantage) that the stories are "live" as soon as you click Submit!

If you're a Story Editor, you'll still begin by clicking "Submit News Item" under the DONATE menu in the black bar at the top. A box may pop up asking you to sign in again to confirm your identity - that's a requirement to reach any of the advanced website features. Once you've done that, you'll see an expanded version of the "Submit a Story" form posted above (forum/viewtopic.php?topic=507483#507483):

I'm using a story from another source as my example, because I find that a bit more complicated than writing a story from scratch.

1) Copy the title of the story from the original article and paste it in the Title field; this will show up as the title of the story you post, so you may want to add capital letters to some words if the style of the paper is all lower case

2) Replace the automatically generated number in the ID field with a version of the title without any spaces or symbols - so "Man Fined $10,000 For Cutting Down Eagle Tree" becomes "ManFined10000ForCuttingDownEagleTree"; the program will remove the dollar sign and comma, but there may be some characters it won't remove, so it may be safer to do that manually. This will become part of the URL for the story. Note: It's fine to shorten the ID version by removing unneeded words so "A Young Eagle at Delta 2 Nest Takes its First Flight out over a Field" could become "YoungEagleAtDelta2TakesFirstFlight" - which has enough to identify the story.

3) Copy the credit line and first couple of sentences and paste them in the Intro Text box. If it comes in with formatting you don't want (strange fonts, background colors, etc., you can try deleting what you just posted (there's not a good way to Undo), and then changing the Post Mode (to the right of Show Topic Icon) from Advanced Editor to Text and then pasting again. Once it's pasted, switch back to Advanced Editor - you'll probably need to add some returns. A bit of trial and error will probably give you a sense of when it's faster to use Text to post and when it's faster to use Advanced Editor. A hint - if you use the Return button, you may get an extra space - web paragraphs always have a space between them; if you want the lines next to each other, use Shift-Return.

4) Sometimes when you copy text from a web article, the URL is posted with the text automatically. If that didn't happen, I add "Read More:" and then paste in the URL. If you're in Advanced Editor, it will usually post as a link. If you're in Text Mode, it may not appear as a link, but will become one when you preview the page.

OR - if the copyright/terms of use on the newspaper site suggest that it's one of the sites that are very strict about reproducing anything from their site (or if you aren't familiar with the source and don't have time to research the terms of use), you can do steps 1 and 2, then write a brief description in your own words - "This is a follow-up to an earlier story about a tree with an eagle nest that was cut down in Campbell River, BC, in February 2012." and post the URL.

5) You normally won't need to post anything in the Body Text box - the purpose of that is so you can divide longer stories so just a short intro is visible on the Home page, and the whole story is available if you click the "read more" link - but that's more likely to be useful for stories that you write yourself (like the weekly updates I'd love to see for all of our nests, but never have time to write). Here's what the form looks like with everything filled in:

6) Click Preview at the bottom of the screen. We've discovered an issue with Internet Explorer 10 - unless you're in Compatibility Mode (details in the opening post), the text in the Intro box will disappear when you click Preview. Happily it's simple to switch to Compatibility mode - but that is something to check if Preview doesn't work. So far all the other browsers we've tried are working fine - and this is what you should see:

If you see anything you'd like to change, click the Editor tab at the top to switch back to the editing view. Once you're happy with the way the story looks, switch to Edit mode one last time, and click the Save button at the bottom. That will publish your story. Smile
