How Many Eggs

Victoria/Sidney Nest

March 15, 2011 - As the sun rises in British Columbia, observers from around the world will be at their computer monitors watching an eagle nest in Sidney and hoping to learn if the eagle they affectionately refer to as "Ma Sidney" laid a third egg Monday evening.

We know that their first egg of the year was laid on March 7, and a second egg was laid on March 10.  We also know that they have laid three eggs in the past - but some years only have two.

If you'd like to take part in the watch - here's the link to the Sidney Eagle Cam - http://www.hancockwildlife.org/index.php?topic=raptors_victoria1#closeup; scroll down a bit for the second cam, with a different perspective.

And please - sign up or log in and join the discussion - http://www.hancockwildlife.org/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=163880#163880.  It truly is amazing ...

...how much we can see and learn from these cameras.

This site is becoming very hard to navigate. It's hard to find the current info without sifting through all of last years (etc) info. It would be nice to have just one page where we could find everything relevant to this year only.

Eagle just got up and move its eggs around and it looks like there is 3. Also there were two little birds flying around trying to take some grass from its nest to build their nest, lol....

Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, April 04 2011 @ 12:32 PM EDT Why are the eagles wings spread?
was checking in on the eagles and I'm not sure if it is Ma or Pa but they have their wings spread over the nest, as I have not seen this before I am a bit concerned the eagle is hurt hope that is not the case and that it is just stretching it's wings.

Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, April 04 2011 @ 04:06 PM EDT Where are answers to posted questions??
I was away most of last year and missed the fledging of Solo. I see the 3 eggs this year and Ma & Pa so I'm excited to be back. BUT what happened to this site? I am very confused and frustrated. I really miss the ongoing conversations where you get immediate answers from the more experienced 'watchers.' The site is really confusing and not nearly as 'intuitive' as it could be. I'd like to see a return to the way it was...much more enjoyable. I don't see any answers to the questions being posed and I'd like to know (I've looked again and again) for a time we can expect the eggs to hatch. Anyone???

Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, April 07 2011 @ 05:22 PM EDT FIRE???
I went upstairs to cook lunch, and when i came back down, the nest tree seems to have had fire on it, or maybe a lightening strike. i think its Pa on the nest now, and he seems uninjured, but, what does the rest of the tree look like? Is it still a safe place for Family Sydney? (note black marks on outer branches, esp where the camera "zip tie" is located in frame.) YIKES!!! Can a strike to the nest cause the eggs not to hatch?

I think we may have a hatching looks like a shell at the side of the nest.

Parent fed the chick at 5:15 PM EDT at which time the other two eggs were plainly visible. Does not seem to be any pips on them yet. The chick seems to be strong and healthy, holding it's head up nicely.

Has anyone seen BOTH the babies being fed?

Authored by: Anonymous on Sunday, April 17 2011 @ 11:15 AM EDT One baby getting all the food
One of the chicks, probably the second one, looks weaker than the first. Mom appears to be mostly feeding only the stronger chick. I noticed the same thing happening with feedings of the Delta 02 chicks. Do the weaker ones ever die because of this? She seems to just respond to the most demanding mouth, which means the weaker chick misses out entirely, at least in the feedings I've been seeing.

Authored by: Anonymous on Sunday, April 17 2011 @ 11:37 AM EDT Another feeding
Mom just did another feeding shortly after the previous one, and again only fed the larger chick. The smaller chick tried to pop up a few times and get food, and the larger chick pecked at it several times, until it disappeared out of sight again.
