A second eaglet at Turtle Bay cracked its shell and emerged under its mother, Liberty, around 10 a.m. Friday.
But, while Liberty was away, another eagle — one called “the intruder” — landed in the nest and killed the chick just before 1 p.m., eagle watchers said.
“I was just screaming, ‘No, no, no,’” said Wendy Dugas, who watched the ordeal on the Turtle Bay Exploration Park’s Eagle Cam. “I sat and watched, screaming for a while, ‘Why didn’t Liberty come back?’”
