VICTORIA & SIDNEY - Both On the Wing -- VIDEO CLIPS

Victoria/Sidney Nest

David Hancock reports in: July 27 --- Great visit to nest today.

Richard and I arrived at the nest 1000 and saw several long and gracious flights by both Victoria and Sidney -- both were beautiful on the wing and doing very well. Here Ihave posted some video I shot of our kids flying. I only saw two landings by Sidney but both were accurate and gracious. On his last flight Sidney took off out of sight to the west.

Victoria's first flight covered over 2 miles of flying and soaring. Over a two hour period she made about 5 flights out over the nest, the bay and the surrounding countryside. Dr. Bird was also there and we were equally impressed with the strength of Sidneys flights. His second flight took him a long way to the west out towards the northern tip of Pat Bay -- and then he did not return. Both parents sat the entire time (actually one did take a short flight to go over to where Victoria had gone out of sight -- but returned as did Victoria) but they basically spent the two hours on two of their favorite trees overlooking the Bay.

Our babies are well on the way to independence. They will likely spend less time in the nest and a few days after the parents think that they have done enough and both disappear, our kids will enter their independent life. I sure wish them well.

We've had to cut the original video down substantially due to the huge file size it was - far larger than the streaming video resolution you've been used to. Here are the flight bits from both birds - enjoy.

Victoria on the wing

With the birds gone, we were not afraid of being "pooped on" under the tree, so were looking at some of the twigs and food items that had fallen from the nest

One of the fish heads from the "nestovers"

Watching Sidney as he headed for Patricia Bay, only to circle to the West and disappear behind the trees

--------------------

July 28-- FURTHER UPDATE: When I first checked into the CAM this am Sidney was on the nest so we know he is quite capable of moving big distances and returning home -- another reassurance only confirmed by being there. Then a few minutes ago, about 1150 I noticed both Sidney and Victoria on the nest -- I think they probably arrived in response to a food drop.

Anyway, both very effectively using the secure nest site -- at least until the parents tire of these home duties!!

Hope you enjoy this video - there are more coming. Later that day we (Richard and I) were discussing the placement and numbers of cameras for this tree for next year. The eagles will be leaving shortly and we'll only have a short time to get the cameras into the tree before they're back.

An eagle soars on high with majestic wings spread wide. Riding the air gracefully with such ease we might forget the gift of God that put him there. Once we would have remarked on the beauty of it's flight. But now we may wonder, "might it be Victoria or Sidney?" For we have lived with them from birth to flight and become as one. The care of their parents we have grown to admire, and these two siblings we now know as if they were our own. We have shared fears and worry, tears and cheers, and most of all, the wonder of it all. Though we've never shared their nest, our hearts were there. Such a precious opportunity to see what was there all along; thank you David Hancock and company for that. And now, when we see an eagle soar, our hearts will soar there too.

Awesome video Henry and Richard.
Thanks for the experience.
It is going to be impossible to look an eagle from now on and not think is Lil or Big. They live in our minds as long there are eagles soaring in the sky.

You have done more than you can imagine for the eagles and their understanding. Awesome animals that need our protection.

David, Richard, Dr. Bird, et. al, I can't tell you how much the video of our kids flying means to me. I've been here since the beginning. So many times I didn't expect Sid to survive, but against the odds, he has become a magnificent adolescent raptor. To see the kidlets flying and soaring at this point is thrilling. A wonderful "ending" to this incredible experience. Thank you so very much for EVERYTHING!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this, David! It's one thing to imagine them soaring up there, but quite another to see them and actually know they are our eagles, our Sidney and Victoria, the eaglets that we have watched for so long now. Bless you for all you've done, and for the wonderful spotlight you've put on these majestic birds. Looking forward to next spring!

Thanks Richard and Mr. Hancock, this is the best send off you could of given us.
We can see with our own eyes, that our Sid and Lil are soaring and flying with ease! We won't have to worry about them anymore, they have "graduated" and ready to face the world!

Dear David et al.....Thank you from Maple Ridge for everything you have done. Thank you for working so hard when the Hornby site was not successful to get the new camera up so we were not without for too long. My mother in New York sends a BIG THANK YOU...as she is not too handy with the PC to send a message herself. My family in Florida again send their thanks. You not only help educate people about these beautiful birds but opened my families eyes to a passion I have always had. You have big fans back East in the USA...my native stomping grounds of New York.

A very big thank you to you, Richard, for the wonderful part you've played in all of this. Your pictures are wonderful! I love the one of Victoria flying and hope there might be one of Sidney, too, before it's all said and done. He came such a long way, overcoming all odds, to become the magnificent bird we are seeing in this video. So often, I wondered if he was going to make it. I would love to purchase prints for framing and hope that will be a possibility. Thanks again.

Just wanted to say "Thanks" for the wonderful updates, photos, and video! Such a joy to see these two birds out and about and doing so well! Thank you, also, for your continued good work(s) and patience with a sometimes overzealous "fan base" of both the Hornby and Saanich nests. :-)

Thank you for all the pictures and all the wonderful that you do. I'm glad that I saw the article on the local news that started me on this journey(Hornby Island) - I wouldn't have missed for the world. I will certainly be here again next year for the eagles and anywhere else you decide to venture.

To Mr David Hancock, Dear Sir, I love the video very much. There is a few things that I have difficulty with though. I can't bring full screen for optimum viewing, it saddens me. The picture screen is really too small. I tried on both my computer and laptop. Perhaps you could give us this feature, and/or post a larger one, like the Calgary Zoo Osprey nest, which is fairly satisfactory, it is both large and we can full screen it. Please consider this. I am very pleased with your work in general Added comment: I do not understand the date display it shows: Authored by: Aline on Wednesday, December 31 1969 @ 04:00 PM PST It is now 13:26 EDT thus 10:26 PDT. Such a treat! Thank you.
I first heard about the eagle webcam from Global TV in Vancouver. I hope anchor Deborra Hope knows that both eaglets, including our endearing little Sidney, are now on the wing. She'd expressed slight alarm over seeing one but not the other getting fed!

Dear David,
You and your staff gave to us and intimate insight into nature in its purest form. You brought us into the nest, to become a part of the beauty, the strife for survival and the magnificence of the eagle. Words seem inadequate to express the gratitude felt from this experience. May each of you and the eagles soar through life carried on the wings of angels, fulfilling your goals, passions, dreams and all the beautiful things life has to offer. My sincere Thank you! Dear David:
Words cannot express the absolute joy you have given us by allowing us to be a part of the eagles` lives.
We have laughed and cried, watching Victoria and Sidney grow into the wonderful fledglings they have become. They have become a part of our very being, as if they were our own children. To see the magnificent and majestic parents nurture their offspring is an experience I would not have missed for anything in the world. It has been a glimpse into nature that most of us would never have had otherwise.
I can understand now, how rewarding and fulfilled your life has been in working with these beautiful birds. You are to be commended for your caring and dedication to this, your life`s work.
To you, David, I personally offer my sincere thank you for all of your contributions. It will be hard to wait for next year - but I will eagerly anticipate the total experience when the eagles return.
For now, it is so very difficult to let go of Victoria and Sidney. I can only imagine how extremely difficult it must be for you.
You are indeed, their surrogate father - and a better one could never be found.
Thanks also to Richard and your crew.
Our lives have been enriched in a way that will never be duplicated - or forgotten.
From the bottom of my heart, I thank you again, so very much. You are a credit to your chosen profession, and I wish you every success in the future.
You, most certainly, have enriched our lives.

Dear David and Richard,
I just wanted to add to the thank yous for sharing the wonderful videos of Victoria and Sidney's flights. It has been an amazing experience to watch them grow from little fluffballs into these majestice eagles, and I feel so proud of them, as well as of mum and dad who have looked after them so well. I have learned so much about eagles from the Hornby and Saanich webcams. I have already ordered a black T-shirt and have just ordered a second one in white!
Thank you from Nanaimo, BC.

I have watched the video with Sid, flying over the treetops. And 27 seconds into the movie you can see a bird high up in the sky, in the background.
Is that Vic or one of the parents?
It is great to see the young eagles fly and soar.
There in the air they show their full majesty.
Now that a pair of European Eagles have raised a young here in the Netherlands, for the first time in perhaps 150 years, I hope that one day I will see an Eagle soar overhead of me. I live on an island in the north of the country and we did have some winter-visitors in the last twenty years.
Watching your webcam has been a wonderfull experience, and it did help me get thru the day after the dutch Peregrine falcons had fledged and the two cams were closed down. :-D
Thank you for making it possible; thank you for sharing it with the world.
